DOOM

Has anyone played Doom 64? I got it for free when buying Eternal. There is also a brutal Doom 64 as well. Worth playing?
If you're looking for a recommendation to try Doom 64, go ahead and do it. The Nightdive remaster is fantastic and the only things that slightly sour the enjoyment of the game are the weird bits of "platforming" and traps Midway decided to throw into an otherwise more traditional Doom game, but it still manages to be a fun and memorable experience in spite of that shortcoming.

Here's a fun tip: Shoot all the barrels in Map 01 to access a secret level (make sure you leave the very first barrel nearby the starting point for last, because the door that opens up near the start once you blow up the last barrel on the map is only open for a limited time, so it's better to save the closest barrel to that door for last). Try not to tear your own hair out completing the secret level. Enjoy.

I took a break from Diablo 3 (the theme was taking on the hell lords soul shards, too demonic I noped out, possesion/the devil are real, I won't make light of it) been improving at Doom Eternal. Horde Mode is fun, got most achivements, beating it on Nightmare has been a pain, on third level but blew all but one extra life. I will have to play really well, now I have all my weapons at the end of arenas you are given an extra life. It's doable but odds are I will have to try it again.

Made it to just before the Gladiator boss with 26 Extra Lives in stock. This run is turning out way better than the last one and most fights I can push through "perfectly". Maybe Ultra Nightmare isn't an impossible idea after all. Will practice the Gladiator for a few rounds to get his second phase down and see how well I can get him.

Edit: Also, the second I grabbed the BFG I told myself not to let that weapon swap blow the shot, get into the first real fight, and proceed to blow the shot. Motherfucker lol.

Double Edit: Dropped one Life at the very end of the second phase during his energy ribbon attack. We basically killed each other at the same time but that would have been the end if it was Ultra Nightmare.

Triple Edit: Beat it with 13 lives to spare. The Icon knocked off 7, no fucking way can I do that fight flawlessly. I'm as gud as I can get. Got my money's worth out of the game for sure.

I've been playing Doom Eternal for the first time recently and I'll be honest, finding it way less fun than Doom 2016. For starters, why the hell is there platforming in a Doom game? Its not a complete disaster like in some other FPS games but it just breaks up the flow of the game and I find the platforming sections annoying and out of place.

Also feels like they crammed too much shit into the gameplay loop. Glory kills in 2016 were a fun way to mix up the action, it had the chainsaw and grenades but I honestly almost never used them. In Eternal you have all of those plus, the flamethrower thing if you want armour and you need to use all of them and constantly switch weapons because you are chronically short on ammo. Constantly feel like the fingers on my left hand are on the verge of tying themselves in knots pressing all these fucking buttons. Maybe I need to get an epic gaymer mouse with some hotkeys and that will help.

Its a pretty good game but feels unfocused and could have been better in my opinion. I'm maybe a third or around half way into the game, maybe my opinion will improve but initial reaction is "meh" compared to 2016.

I know right?

Then again, you are not allowed to "not suck the dick" of Doom Eternal.

I played Doom Eternal as a finale of a doom marathon I was streaming and I think the problem is to play this game right after 2016 since there is this "impact" brought by the changes even if it looks the same from the outside. Your brain is too wired by 2016's rules and Eternal changes things far too suddenly.

I legit think Doom Eternal is best played after at least a significant break after 2016 but I really think Eternal could have found a way to easy 2016 players better into it. If you play Eternal like 2016 for very long, you are going to have a bad time.

That's the thing with Eternal. It's its own thing. I feel similarly, but you'll enjoy it more if you try not to think of 2016 as much.

My speculation is that the low ammo is there to keep the buffs they made to the slayer in check. Siege Mode may not be around but everything else is stronger, so the only way it seems to balance things out was to force gaps in the rampage.

The really odd thing about Eternal is that Hugo talked about how Clockner's Kadingir Sanctum run served as inspiration but Clockner made a big post about how he dislikes Eternal.

I have to admit Eternal's honeymoon period wore off quite quickly for me. There's just so much going on it gets exhausting trying to balance the mechanics and only being able to play the way the game wants you to. Plus the story is just pure cringe, 2016 did it right by having lore that was in the background, not Doomguy quoting a line from the comic and audiologs of a scientist practically having an orgasm over how amazing you are.

Another thing that's really annoyed me and I forgot to mention- the goo puddles that slow you down and stop you from jumping. They are just a massive annoyance and add nothing to the game in my opinion. Also feels like the devs just added them to piss the player off. There was one arena where I didn't realise I dropped into a goo puddle and got gang banged to death by demons. Partially my fault I guess. A little later on there is a corridor section with this goo and half way through demons spawn either side of the corridor and you just get fucked. Thanks game.

Also the swimming sections can eat shit. Worse than the platforming.
pure cringe
I can't hate on eternal too much for this because its in 2016 too but I find the chibi funko pop collectibles cringe. You just know some soy boy cuck at Bethesda/ID was responsible for putting that in and its super gay.

Ive been playing doom 3 VR lately. It's good. It's really fucking good. graphically its aged really well, and for an even better plus Ive never actually played 3 before 2016. So it's extra intense as shit.

There's no hud, your guns and wrist have indicators of ammo and health respectively and the immersion is total.

There is just something deeply unsettling about horror in VR. You know its not real, you know you have plenty of ammo and these fuckers cant hurt you, but dam if isnt scary to see something physically come after your ass. There's basically a button in your brain that tells you to get the fuck out of there every time you see em come at you and the sheer volume of unique animations and ways for them to jump out is fantastic.

I love those fucking monster closets, very cool way to make you pay attention to the environment and get paranoid of every nook and cranny. On some level I know the best way to not be scaried is to go full commando and run around, but I couldn't help but take my time and slowly inch my way though the dark ass hallways and ponder where these fuckers were going to come next.

The environment and atmosphere is the best the series has ever had, and I love how lived in and real the mars facility feels. I got babylon 5 vibes when I walked in the first time, and then when all hell breaks loose.... the com Chatter is sheer terrifying brilliance. Really wish the newer games had more moments were you could interact with survivors and learn about their lives.

Instead we have the narrator quoting the comic, and Satan jizzing himself.

2016's plot was superior by there being less of it. Nothing else.

You just made me sad that there will never be a sequel to Doom 3, because fuck me that blend of "just realistic enough to be lived in" is now all but gone.

I play Doom using my gaming PC with Zdoom running at 1080p. I don't use any wads. I also play Heretic and the Hexen games the same way. I was just playing Heretic the other day. But I haven't played Doom in a while.

Should there be a Heretic/Hexen thread now, I wonder?

Just how many people have memories/recent experiences of playing the trilogy (and whatever Heretic 2 was)

I thought 2016 was pretty good with that. There was enough environmental storytelling to make me believe that 3 was a prequel to all the other games in the series, and I really dug that. Where doom droped the ball in my opion was with Eternal. That ditched environmental storytelling and physical interaction so hard I got whiplash.

One cool thing about Doom 3 VR is that it comes packaged in with the expansion pack and the remastered extra lost mission where you playing as a bravo team survivor. Im told the design for hell in that segment was pretty cool.

What is very striking for me in doom 3 as far as storytelling is concerned, is how ordinary the PDA's are. Most games with audio tapes have a habit of having people record them as shit is going down and giving a cornball "we are FUCKED " line reading. Here everything is so ordinary and banal it's pretty surreal in contrast with all the violence.

Two things leap out of me as I continue to play this game. The more human or animal looking an enemy is, the more scared I am of it. Im fine with fighting out and out demons for some reason, but zombies? Shiiiiit. The other thing is I dont think ive ever felt such a primal sense of despair when I have to retrace my steps and have no idea where to go. Because these fuckers can teleport now and nowhere is safe. Good times! Yeah im still pretty early in the game.
