My basic thoughts before playing

-I think PA got nerfed but can't tell, at the very least fan of knives is scepter now.
-Veno can no longer stack wards on people. Veno's scepter is now his innate and new scepter increases the damage further/
-No more Nature Prophet late game fast ratting single treant!
-Clockwork is going to be interested in an ultra late game scenario since he can just endlessly consume chainmail now.
-They got rid of a lot of shitty neutral items and some really good ones (Like the tier 4 silence blade). The lower tier new ones look good, while the top tier new ones look really shitty. People aren't gonna want a divine rapier effect and increasing spell aoe isn't worth additional health as spell cost. Honestly, I wish they'd switch all neutral items over to passives. Outworld staff is completely useless outside the highest skill play.
-Glad to see they changed Radiants T1 safe lane tower layout. When they did that to Dire's I noticed right away that the new layout was terrible for Dire, while Radiant had their safe, cozy tower. Now they're both toxic.
-Omni might be toxic now. Hammer now costs 0 mana and slows on hit.
-It looks like they're trying to cut down on healing, status resist, and evasion again as all got hit with a nerf. But they're also combining all healing into a single stat now.
-Lich orb now lingers by default....great...
-Medusa and Lifesteal got general nerfs since they were some of the highest win rate heroes atm.
-Silencer got new facets, he's gonna go glaive bounce for damage, silence dmg % for hard support.

  • Lina saved from hell
  • Venge revived from her post-Arcana nerf
  • Furion nerfed
  • Medusa and Auroth escaped with minimal nerfs
  • THAT Silencer facet was removed
Good.
  • Naga buffed for unfun BKB piercing root+break support instead of her actual splitpush carry role (why?)
  • PA nerfed again (why???)
  • Windranger still barely usable
Bad.

Removing blink overshoot was an interesting idea, technically it's a dreaded "skill ceiling reduction" but it didn't really matter since range indicators were added, and it was janky as fuck regardless. Unifying all healing and lifesteal manipulation in one effect reminds me of Deadlock.

I really want to see a Drow rework at this point, she feels very outdated in current Dota design, just rushed too easily and doesn't do enough damage to justify her vulnerability.

Weird to see Dark Willow buffed, she's very good already, and it was for the weirdest part, her innate.

Very out of place innate, it technically makes her the best bottle holder in the game, but you just don't buy bottle on her because she can't lane in mid well. She doesn't have spammable farming skills, so she doesn't need regen and is a bad mid. And even if you're farmed, you can't use her innate to save yourself and heal, because you can't lifesteal from her spells. Very weird.
Clockwork is going to be interested in an ultra late game scenario since he can just endlessly consume chainmail now.
You'd have to go really, really late to make it matter, since it's very slot inefficient, you miss building on bigger items, can't farm fast enough, and won't be online in time. Even if the team is physical heavy, a blademail would go a lot further.
Will be hilarious in turbo though.

This wasn't in the patch notes, did they add lore descriptions to every new item and ability that didn't have them?

FUCKING FINALLY
Extremely autistic complaint to have but it had genuinely bothered me for years, I event sent feedback about it. It felt like another seam left open that showed Valve didn't really care for the game and let it decay. Not that anyone cares about Dota lore after Laidlaw left and that abyssmal Korra Korean cartoon, but good on ya Valve. You got an intern to write all those descriptions in an afternoon. Bet it was Hopoo.

Yeah, I went and crunched the numbers on it at work the other day and realized that it wasn't very efficient. Buying the secret shop armor is more eff armor to gold than eating the same amount of chainmail. You really only want to be doing it once you're 6 itemed + scepter + moonshard. Seen people try it in turbo, but games are really over too fast 15-20 mins and rarely do you get long turbo games. Best use would be to buy cheaper support items like scepter, blademail, shiva, force staff, pipe, dust and eat it, but even those are a lot of gold. If Valve wants to do something interesting with clockwerk, maybe give him 1 stack of a perma buff every 1 minute thats .3/.6/.9 armor (scaled off ult).

It's for pos4/5 Willow, it makes her very good at trading rightclicks with enemy supports in a sidelane because it makes healing salves restore like 700 HP if you use Shadow Realm during the Salve duration. Willow has some crazy starting attack speed too so she's good at doing this. You start with cheap stats, circlet, branches, quickly buy whatever early item components will make you a bit bulkier, and take aggressive trades. When you're low enough to get value out of a salve you pop it and shadow realm, heal all your HP, and go back in. You also get high value out of self-healing with Urn of Shadows charges later on.

In other news, Clockwerk's winrate has dropped 6% due to his new facet, where he eats chainmails to become bigger and get permanent armor, being absolute dogshit but also really funny. He received no nerfs.

I take back my complaints, the buffed innate is very comfy for trading in lane. The UI changes are also lovely, except the game is a lot more unstable now, thanks Valve.
Really should grind the meta heroes of the patch, my confidence ranking is too low, if I start losing I'll derank immediately.

>open dota
>check stats

every single hero i mained is now below rank 100 in win %
underlord, hoodwink, pango, grimstoke
just an absolute slaughter

Underlord offlane really doesn't seem that bad still. The others are in a rough spot for sure though. I really wish volvo had addressed Axe/LC/Cent offlane domination or the fact that WK is once again weapons grade retarded strong in their most recent patch.

Also as a shadow shaman player holy shit this character is broken as fuck right now. Not even just one facet.

I feel like the meta is super bursty. I have been having better success in close or losing games by trying to rat than by trying to play safe. Patch is very snowbally.

Hoodwink is so incredibly bad now that even when I win I don't enjoy it. I'm just looking at my kit like, if I was playing any real hero I'd not need all these items to have an impact in the game. I could just win without having to itemize super optimally. When it comes down to late game you're just fucked. She's really the only character I really enjoy playing and they ruined her. I just lost a game 2v4 because the entire team couldn't kill a pudge and huskar. You're just losing these fights staring at the screen like, if I had just picked a meta hero I do not enjoy playing we'd not be having such a bad time. It's the kind of game that just ends your dota interest for another few months.

I get it, it can be frustrating to have your favorite hero be terrible for seemingly no reason. My favorite hero is Doom. Go check his winrate on dotabuff right now, I dare you.

I don't know what MMR you play at but if you are Archon or under I think you can definitely still find success with your favorite heroes no matter their winrates. I went through quite a lot of trial and error getting Doom to not just instantly lose me games, but I am in a pretty happy place now that I have changed my mindset. I still wish he wasn't criminally terrible but at least I can find joy in my picks again, even if they are more situational counterpicks than I would prefer. I would also recommend trying to find a group of one or two friends of a similar skill level to yourself to play with to reduce mental boom from having to carry people way below your own MMR.

As an aside has anyone else noticed a massive uptick in smurfs/hard griefers? I started playing again semi recently and I think I got myself stuck in smurf pool or something because now I either get a legit 0 games played new player or a divine rapier buying ~archon smurf on enemy team every game and it fucking sucks. I have also seen people picking tiny and throwing allies into enemy team, breaking items and running it down and just abandoning all become very common game to game. I think less than a quarter of my games right now are quality and the rest having ruiners doing their thing.

My favorite hero is Doom
i'd straight up fucking kill myself, he was S-tier in the Beta and the last time I played him I was just in shock at how much he fucking sucks. It's like they completely forgot about him, and I know why: his kit is from when the game was more slow and more complicated. Things like neutrals having passive abilities that meaningfully interacted with the game was what made Dota have the depth and character League of Legends never had. But those small quirky things are irrelevant now.

I don't know what MMR you play at but if you are Archon
When I tried to play a few competitive matches it was legit trying to place me in herald so I gave up and just stopped playing and never completed calibration. I wasn't going to try to climb out of herald.

The issue is I'm mostly playing turbo because games are inexcusably long. I don't have time for a 60 minute long game. When I am playing the game consistently in unranked the players I see who are ranked are in archon/legend mostly. The thing is at lower rungs of gameplay neither team knows how to push objectives so the game just never ends. You literally cannot corral these fucking idiots to destroy a tower even after a fight. What people do is go to one lane for a perpetual tardfight and that lane is a tug of war until eventually people stop trying and then boredom compels the winning team to march up to the base and actually win.

I had an unranked game where I was PA. We were losing. I know that Dota is a grossly overcomplicated economy simulator. Whoever has the most gold almost always wins. So I just stopped showing up to the retard fights and AFK farmed for 40 minutes. Then I showed up to one teamfight, got an ultra kill at 60 minutes in, and we throned. I finished the game like 4-2-1 and the kills were lopsided 10+ in enemy favor. That's considered a perfect game of PA. It is the most boring fucking thing.

At 60 minutes nobody is having fun. I firmly believe that at 50 minutes that both ancients should turn into giant cannons and start fighting at all structures on the map. The team with fewer structures left will have the enemy ancient-turret fire on their ancient-turrent first. So you either have to bumrush down structures or just lose by 60 minutes. If both teams somehow manage to not touch a single structure and both ancients die at the same time, they both lose and everyone is banned from the game.

Turbo is mostly just tardfights but the game isn't balanced for everyone being 7 slotted at 25 minutes. That's why Huskar and Pudge become immortal. So the pool of viable meta heroes in Turbo is even smaller and Hoodwink is even more nigger-tier. But if I want a game that doesn't last 60 fucking minutes that's why I have to play.

I've thought really long and hard about what kind of fun high mobility position 3 could conceivably be used to push down towers the hardest so that games don't last 60 minutes but i can't think of any.

The problem with Doom is that he is perma picked in pro and he gets balanced around pro instead of normal people. This means you have to play out of your mind to compensate for the difference in power.

As for Turbo, I cannot stand it. I understand wanting shorter games, but turbo really feels like such a bad and watered down version of the game that it isn't even DOTA anymore. Besides I am lucky enough that the last turbo I played still went 45m megas vs megas.

I agree about 60m games though. I think if the games goes 60m+ the game should flip a giant coin and one team just loses. That way you have to push a lead if you are ahead and cannot fuck around, and if you are losing then maybe you flip a win by stalling the game to 60m. It also fixes grief fountain farming from retard smurfs padding their scores for their russian youtube highlight clips.

I do find Huskar is really pretty bad this patch. I like Huskar, but I think he needs reworked. The changes to healing seem to have just hurt a lot of these hyper healing heroes and heal reduction through items like Skadi and Vessel are more prominent than ever. Blademail is getting also taken unironically in Divine on cores it really shouldn't be able to even slot it and they are getting away with it. Something is wrong with healing vs lifesteal right now. Doesn't help that Heart is a legit dogshit item.

Yeah I play a pretty decent amount of chaos knight and he is usually the only one allowed to be good for any real length of time. Sometimes Tblade or PL will be cancer for a patch but valve seems pretty quick to tap that shit down. I have a friend who loves Monkey King and you can probably guess how that works out for him, especially recently.

In any case sticking to usually simple heroes is your best bet if you just want a strong pick. How long has WK, Axe or LC crushed pubs for? I doubt that is going to change any time soon either.

I just hope next hero release is something relatively simple in kit so normal people can pick and enjoy "bard frog" instead of it being a pro pick only.

underlord, hoodwink, pango, grimstoke
Underlord and Pand I've always felt like in the games they're in either they have massive impact or they have zero impact, there's no inbetween. It doesn't help that Pang is focused around abilities and he doesn't have short cooldowns.

Grimstroke while low, is never really a bad hero. Hood suffered greatly that last patch when they removed chainlightning from Gleipnir, since hood liked both items. Plus you can tell that Valve never liked hood having as much damage as she did while being uncatchable. That's why I think they've been nerfing her.

So the pool of viable meta heroes in Turbo is even smaller and Hoodwink is even more nigger-tier.
Hood is great in turbo cause you can easily get money for the crit build and destroy the enemy team anytime they stick together.

Anyways, as for the doom, I remember picking him a decade ago and regularly having a near 100% winrate with him, cause the game was so slow back then. Nowadays, the games so fast that having 2 minute cooldown is devasting outside of high skill coordinated game. And ffs I hate doom pickers in turbo. It's a fucking 15-20 min game and a hero with a 2 min cooldown and does jack shit is useless. Reason why he's the 2nd lowest win rate hero in turbo.

I'd really like to play broodmother more, but god damn she's bad in turbo since she wants to slow game to eat up the jungles and she falls behind very easy and doesn't scale for the late-late game.
