IIRC renting a house is about $1,000/month where I live, so while it is expensive it isn't extremely high, esp. for two people. And like Smokedaddy said, the insurance company most likely has a deal with a someone to provide housing.
Rentals here cost about $450-800. Two to three bedrooms. And that's for a house. I'm in an area probably economically similar to Chris's. There probably isn't a deposit due to the situation. Probably is at least a duplex, or a free standing house. Electric company probably just rolled their old account over to the new address, water may be included, not a major expense. They'd have to pay those expenses anyhow, so it's shouldn't be on State Farm to provide their electric.
The furniture may be rented, but those places are such usurers they won't care what shape it's in when they get it back as long as the damage isn't obviously malicious. They'll take it back on the principle that they don't want you to have it even if they can't use it, but their business model is set up to make a handsome profit in spite of filthy people letting their pets and autists use their furniture as a litter box.
I doubt Chris will be happy when whoever owns the rental furniture charges him and Barb for its inevitable destruction after being covered in as much smoke-damaged crap as Barb is able to salvage from the ruins.
I get the feeling that Barb will actually be more uncomfortable in an uncluttered house seeing how the hoard was like her security blanket. I doubt she learned anything from the fire since she, like Chris, seems to have placed the blame entirely on Keurig and will most likely start to rebuild the hoard after she's done salvaging what remains of the old hoard. Probably the only thing that will hold her back is being older now and less mobile, in addition to lack of funds to buy shit.
Same thing with Chris actually. Don't forget that on top of being an extremely lazy fucker (just look at how messy his old room was), he's as much of a hoarder as his mother is, only his hoard is made up of toys and vidya. He's going to try and rebuild his "collection" as soon as he can.

This isn't that bad. That said, if he tries to pull it often enough people will get mad at him. I'm worried this will teach Chris to panhandl, who will constantly cite the fire and the trolls as reasons why people should give him money. People will only be charitable for so long though, so there might be some epic calling outs.
Aw shit, I didn't think of the possibility of Chris using this as an excuse to continue to panhandle (on the internet, at least. It's ridiculous how Chris will learn and repeat behavior that benefits him, like throwing tantrums (as a child) and continue that behavior even after it no longer gets what he wants (bann instead of reward) Same with whining, it once worked for him, now it no longer does. I wonder if panhandling will be something he maintains well into the future after seeing how it has worked for him in the month after the fire.

I'm not. I understand that its good that Chris is thankful for once and doesn't come across as too much of a whiney cunt in this message. However, Chris would have to do alot to actually impress me.
