Flags & Vexillology

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
I talked about this recently and kicked around using a 7-striped progressless flag as the Pride Before Fall logo. Removing the chevron creates what's called a swallow-tailed flag (notably, Ohio and Allied Occupied Germany had swallow-tailed flags).

Removing something from a flag is an extremely fascinating form of expression. It was seen in both Hungary and Romania during Soviet occupation. Anti-soviet movements would raise their flag with the Communist state seal removed, creating a hole in the center.
I remember you mentioning it last year on MATI. I don't think it's caught on much unfortunately but it's a very nice flag with like you say very cool historical references even if it's accidental.

Honestly I like the Old Flag of the State of Georgia, even though it's basically a Confederate Battle Flag with blue and a coat of arms on the top left.

The Current one is fine too, and it is interesting that they came up with it after releasing this atrocity to replace the 1950s version.
Yeah ironically enough they still put the flag it replaced on it, but this was the early 2000s so there was actual compromise back then.
That's not the current flag, that was a placeholder that was subsequently replaced by the current design which also evokes Confederate imagery and is one of the better US state flags.

Has anybody ever noticed how bad flags can be categorized into 4 distinct types of shitty flags:
1. Shitty city/county/state seal on a basic background (Bonus points if it is copyrighted so finding a non-pixelated version is a pain in the ass.)
2. The vast majority of what r/vexillology creates and upvotes. (Minnesota and Utah's new flags.)
3. Got into flag making all the way back when it first became a thing and kept their recolored Polish flag till the modern day. (Looking at you, Federal states of Austria.)
4. Slop clearly made by corporations (South Korean province flags.)

This but a Kiwi bird for the Kiwi flag.

Do we not have a Kiwi flag yet? Even though nool is an obsessive vexillologist?
There was a post that had possible Kiwi Farms flags:
Why doesn't this site have it's own flag? I put some ideas together:

I'm not that happy with the shield emblem, I feel it might be too simplistic but I don't have the skill to do anything better. I think you could do something with a Kiwi bird, maybe some type of two headed version but the bird has really small wings. The wi-fi symbol I'm a on the fence about. Adding more specific symbiology would be nice. I like the plain tricolor with the dark green the most.

I noticed after doing these that the dark grey needed to be darker but I'm not going make into now. It's simplistic but I like the colors.
I also considered that New Zealand laser kiwi flag a contender:
Some of the submissions to the 2015/2016 New Zealand Flag Referendums were wild:

‘The laser beam projects a powerful image of New Zealand. I believe my design is so powerful it does not need to be discussed.’

The flag even has a Facebook page:

There are a lot of tricolor flags, most of which aren't outstanding. But i always loved the Imperial Russian flag, i think the combination of black, whatever this shade of yellow is and white mesh nicely together and look clean

Same with the Kursk flag, which funnily enough has the same tricolor Imperial Flag in the middle, but upside down. The upside down imperial flag is also considered a alternate flag of Novorossiya

(Left: Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine. Right: Flag of a Donetsk People's Republic battalion.) I think both of these flags are amazing, the symbolism of the sun setting over a vast ocean is great. They're peculiar and some of my favorites. I do like the Russian version ever so slightly more due to the darker colors, but both of them are mesmerizing

I like the flag of Monaco.

If you're dyslexic, it can also serve as a Polish flag.

Something about the simple red and white really speaks to me.
