Just talking from a Fire Management POV, there is a technique in primitive smithing called Blacking where you make a VERY basic form of forge ceramic by vitrifying clay rich in organics to the point it get's rid of anything volatile that can effect the fire - Ceramics are heat resistant and once vitrified work off ablation to extend there working life.

Fire bricks or Cakes used in forges where a mix of smooth clay, horse dung (ideally but cow dung will work), and grass / hay, what happened was you'd mix it up as evenly as possible and as air free as you can and then bake it to hard in a low fire and then crank up the heat to vitrify it making as much air gap insulation as you can (this is how Airogel works but on a really refined scale) an burn off anything chemically volitile in the process to leave you with as much of a "neutral fire" as you can possible get.

What he is doing is just retarded, yes you can char the outer layer of wood to make it more fireproof (a lot of traditional asian building styles did this, and in Europe we normally flamed the ends of logs to prevent rot) and it will take heat a little better but it will add a nasty flavor to the tobacco, and more importantly as the carbon layer builds up needs to removed or it will catch fire in it's own right by being turned into charcoal.

I am not a great pipe smoker but have a few and use them and having to ream out your pipe on a semi regular basis is important if your using unlined pipes, hell they make something called "Pipe sweetener" to cut down on this by adding sugar to it to combat the sour carbon taste.

I hear that drink combo is painful to the entire body. Maybe they reformulated it over the years to prevent people like Cobes from drink combo'ing NyQuil with other ingredients - to death. Robitussin definitely was and Benadryl used to be like that as well I think.

I think that they add some sort of chemical that's supposed to make you vomit if you ingest too much, but there's still so much we don't know about a Boglim's physiology that it's possible that emetic agents have little to no effect.
