Minecraft

  • Happy Easter!
reading on /v/ once that mod kind of died.
but not for the reasons you think, it was because the author was retarded enough to enforce patreonshit.
I knew Mojang DMCA'd it, but was it because of the paywall shit or the fact it was a sex mod? Because there are plenty of mods with built in paywalls that i know of, so i'd imagine it would be because of the sex.

yes.

they are paranoid and do their best to keep themselves under the radar to a point they often censor themselves in case someone gets uppity and decides to tell microsoft.

For those of you keeping up with the modded scene, the Minecraft Forge project has been undergoing a restructuring and re-brand under the new "NeoForged" (archive link) moniker. Key reason for this is because the founder of Forge, LexManos, couldn't stop being a fat sperg for one minute and everyone else on the team finally got fed up with him.

What has happened here?

As of July 12th 2023, the discord formerly known as “Forgecord” was rebranded to a new project - NeoForged.

NeoForged is a fork of MinecraftForge. Almost all of the original team has joined the new team, with one obvious exception, LexManos (hereby referred to as Lex).

This news post will attempt to explain the circumstances leading to this drastic action. It presents the perspective of the new team however, and specifically, my (cpw) perspective and motivations.

Why did this happen?

Firstly, I want to be clear. Attributing this to a single event is to attribute death by a thousand cuts to a single cut.

After the latest difficulties in the Minecraft Forge discord, I wanted to understand why Curle felt she needed to resign from the position Lex put her in - namely, leader of the project. She had done an amazing job of organizing the team prior to the promotion to leader, and it was surprising to me that she felt the need to leave so shortly after. The discussion with her opened my eyes to the fact that there had been ongoing difficulties with the team she had spent so much time to build, and Lex was the root of the problem.

I want to be clear, Lex has been a problem in the modding community for many, many years. Almost every veteran minecraft modder has had a negative interaction with him over the past 12 years. I have, when able to, tried to steer people to not abandon Forge just because of Lex - defending him in many a private conversation with a frustrated modder who’d just been called a “Cunt” for 1,000th time by Lex, or banned from our online spaces for a trivial transgression like discussing Fabric or coremods.

In evaluating the situation I was in, it quickly became clear I could take one of three actions:

  1. Do nothing. If I did nothing, I believe we would be watching the slow disintegration of the Forge project. This is why we recruited Curle in the first place - to try and help build a useful team, that would enable Lex to step back from the limelight and community management aspects. Her departure would cement that the Forge team was too toxic to continue to function in a viable capacity, in my opinion. We would have seen more public disputes and abuse, with more modders and community leaders becoming increasingly frustrated.
  2. Babysit Lex. In effect, this is what I have been doing, to a more or lesser extent, for the past 10 years. He would not see it that way, but I have been defending Lex to all comers for many many years. I truly thought that if he could stop being so toxic online, we would become successful.
  3. Do what we have done - fork the project and start afresh.
Note that due to personal physical and mental health issues, I was not well enough to continue with 2 and have rather withdrawn from the community - effectively 1 - because I needed to preserve my health. Lex has argued repeatedly that I had the power to rein him in, but that’s an accident of history and not something that I believe should have been necessary between two adult friends, and if it had killed me - a non-zero likelihood (I am not a young man) - then there would have been no one left anyway.

Yep, Minecraft modding died after 1.12.2. Now we have like 4 modding API's, Forge, NeoForged, Fabric and Quilt. Troon infestation aside, this will only lead to death of Minecraft modding because no modder will be willing to try and keep their mod running across four different modding API's where each and every one of them will be incompatible with each other.

It's really sad to see, not only has Minecraft been murdered by Microsoft, the modding aspect is being murdered by a spastic cannibalistic community that thinks making brand new forks because of petty drama is the way to go. Now it's a dead gay game and I feel sad because of how many quality hours I've spent playing and modding it. I hate this timeline.

Not surprising. Some of those minecraft mods are so complex that they feel like different games entirely, the amount of autism in that community has got to be astronomical. I've heard the botania and thaumcraft guys in particular are huge spergs.

There could be a community watch thread on the hijinks and slapfights minecraft modders get into if one was willing to sift through all the autism and discords.

Mojang decided to update its EULA (End User Licence Agreement) with absolutely awful changes

on the 2nd of August 2023, [Mojang just released a blog post notifying users about changes to their eula updates](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/article/minecraft-eula-and-commercial-usage-guidelines-updates) (required by law).[The changed EULA has been rewritten with lots of portions from the old version and has added sections that are likely to cause the game some serious damage](https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/eula)

This comes after the recent gun server eula drama where Mojang arbitrarily decided through loose wording that guns fell under the "adult content" guidelines, forcing servers such as GTM to degrade their experience due to the fear of being restricted.

Here are the changes that they made:
  • Servers with "player queues" such as 2b2t are now non-EULA compliant
- Access to your server can’t be limited to or controlled, directly or indirectly, by a player owning or having access to out-of-game content, products, or services
  • Any server, piece of online content such as video or other may be taken down due to any reason whatsoever if "we [Mojang] don't like what you are doing"
- All permissions and consents are given by us at our discretion and may be revoked at any time if we think that it is appropriate to do so, or we don’t like what you are doing
  • All server owners are obligated to add a disclaimer saying "NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT [PRODUCT/SERVICE/EVENT/etc.]. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT"
- Prominently include the disclaimer similar to the following: “NOT AN OFFICIAL MINECRAFT [PRODUCT/SERVICE/EVENT/etc.]. NOT APPROVED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH MOJANG OR MICROSOFT” on your product, listing, description, website/webpage, and all other related materials.
  • Using "Minecraft" as a significant part of a creative work, such as a youtube video, is no longer allowed
- “Minecraft - the ultimate Kotoba server for Redstone” - Not allowed

- "Minecraft – the ultimate help app" - Not allowed
  • Any server (or other things) is considered commercial under every circumstance, even if it does not make money or not
- This applies, for example, if you want to set up and run any non-commercial blogs, servers, community forums, fan sites, fan clubs, news groups, events, and gatherings.
  • In-person Minecraft events like lan parties are no longer allowed to engage in sponsorships if said event is to make money
- You may not accept sponsorships for purposes of profit
  • In-person Minecraft events cannot be marketed using Minecraft assets such as logos or fonts
- Do not use official Minecraft brand or assets on your marketing materials create. You may use the Minecraft name in a secondary name, secondary title, or description only.
  • Servers with ANY content not suitable for 10 year olds, whatever that may be, is no longer allowed
- All servers, entitlements, and advertising are suitable for audiences of all ages (for example, gambling, pornography, violence, terrorism, explicit lyrics, or other unsafe/mature content) and they don’t harm the Minecraft brand [Minecraft is rated 10+]
  • Servers are obligated to have a "terms of service" clause before even joining the server for the first time, in a way that describes the content of the server and pricing of ranks for example if aplicable
- You provide information to users on all the content and pricing applicable to your server before a person joins, signs up, or signs in
  • Fictional story writers are not allowed to include minecraft brands or assets (like fonts or images) for minecraft related works
- You don’t use the Minecraft brand and assets anywhere on the front or back covers of your publication

Are they also targeting modders?
It seems like it. I believe that mods fall under the rule of being commercial, but not really sure about the part of the creative work. Because mods are the creative works IN Minecraft itself, not OUTSIDE of Minecraft

My question is this: Does this come on the orders of Microsoft or straight from Mojang themselves?

I'm leaning towards Microsoft wanting this EULA in place.
Many people have pointed out that Microsoft where the one who pushed this change

Using "Minecraft" as a significant part of a creative work, such as a youtube video, is no longer allowed
Did a copyright lawyer who had never heard of Minecraft before write this? The whole thing is awful and draconian but this in particular is just absurd.

Only two years ago the game was celebrating "1 trillion views" on Youtube:

This screams like something Microsoft would do, I'm not sure if Mojang is stupid enough to try it.

There is literally no reason for an adult to play Minecraft unmodded, what the fuck. I don't think there will be a day of reckoning for the mods I use (mostly Minecolonies in the Life in the Village modpack) but I can easily see this just nuking a chunk of their fanbase.

If I explicly disagree with the EULA, and keep playing the game on the high sea, am I immune to Bill Gates' girldick?
If you play singleplayer then you're immune but if you want to host a Minecraft server then:(

I imagine the lawyers who wrote this to either be old nepotistic drunks that only understand videos games as "that stupid computer thing my son liked before he stopped talking to me 5 years ago". Or are gleeful devils where phrases like "destroying goodwill" "devastating to the community" "anti-consumer" actively make them jizz their pants.

No matter what we will own nothing and will be "happy".
