Every time someone falls for the "Fine People Hoax" Dilbertman punches an angel in rage. You can't blame people for seeing the follow up line as backtracking though. The only two sides in Charlottesville were the genuine white supremacists and neo-Nazis on one side and counter protesters on the other. What else would he mean by there being "fine people on both sides"? Who goes to a gathering organized by white supremacists, on the side of white supremacists, but isn't a white supremacist?
I'm not saying Trump is racist, anyone who does believe that needs some kind of IQ check. However you cannot blame people for seeing this quote from him and being prettyabout it.
As to the point of: "What else would he mean by there being "fine people on both sides"? Who goes to a gathering organized by white supremacists, on the side of white supremacists, but isn't a white supremacist?" The name of the rally was "Unite The Right" which was a half baked idea to get every group on the right side of the political spectrum to come support a statue of Robert E. Lee. By the time of the actual rally, most non-white nationalist affiliated groups dropped out, but there were people there just to support that statue.
