S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (Stalker) Thread

This thread is reading like "STALKER fans excited to play STALKER for the very first time, shocked to find out STALKER is actually bullshit jank with a gameplay engine that either runs perfectly well or is the buggiest piece of shit possible with no in-betweens".

Welcome to the Zone.
You are a moron. The old games were janky pieces of shit that did unconventional and cool things which made them worth playing despite their problems. Stalker 2 is a shittily designed Far Cry clone with a Soviet sorry I mean UKRANIAN reskin. I really can't stand your kind of attitude: "Why are you complaining? Old product also bad LOL welcome to teh zone!!!". Get some standards.

So much this. Xray & source engine are the two best engines OAT for me.

That is some tourist shit right here.

No one will lose out on a nice experience if the jank gets ironed out so I really don't understand the people defending it. Yes yes it's tradition or whatever but everyones experience improves if the devs are pressured into fixing their shit and not enabled into leaving it as is.

This game is so broke lol. I got an m860 ith a magazine that was named. Later after i ahd thought i had equipped it i notyiced i was handloading shells. So i wenyt back t o the trader to see if i had sold it (ive been drinkin heh) and there was an m860 in the trdaer that had a goofy name so i bought it. After quiping it and reloading it was also handloading. it was no longer named when i hovered over it and it was now unnamed. the game retroactively downgraded my guns. Im 60% sure i never sold the mag fed shotgun and regardless niether is now.

long post to say this game was way unfinished and needs A LOT OF POLISH.

You just don't understand that is the next level of simulation of living in an Eastern European trash country like Ukraine think you get a quality product turns out you've been ripped off by a gypsy

Didn't really follow the release of the game apart from hearing that there are technical issues, which as to be expected. But my question for the people who played it is this still Stalker ? Mechanics and gameplay systems that are unique and far removed from what is to be seen in typical AA-AAA slop ? An overbearing atmosphere ? Was there a vision that the developers realized, or this is some shit attempt to appeal to a bigger market ?

Most similarities to the originals are surface level. The sound design is very good and some environments are genuinely atmospheric. The strongest parts of the game I found are the anomalies and artifact hunting, which are almost a 1:1 recreation, including the downright questionable balancing of artifact stats. The actual gameplay is almost nothing alike, especially the combat, which is much more akin to a modern Far Cry title. There are indicators for when enemies spot you and exactly where they are at all times, which when coupled with the combat music telling you when everyone is dead makes sure fights are completely devoid of tension. Mutants take upwards of 5 full magazines from an AK to kill and give you nothing in return, not that there is a need to actually kill them anyway because most of them can be made harmless by simply strafing.
Human enemies are very bullet-spongy unless you shoot them in the head and have an extreme propensity to throw grenades. When in combat, enemies always know exactly where you are and occasionally shoot you through walls. All NPCs drop the same loot (2-5 bullets, a medkit and if you are lucky maybe even a sausage) and the inventory system is almost entirely superfluous.
Enemy spawns are hilariously bad and you often experience "clown car" scenarios, where dozens of enemies will appear out of rooms you just cleared as soon as you turn your back and walk a couple of feet from it. The despawn range is incredibly short, making it so flanking maneuvers (which are pointless anyway as enemies never lose track of where you are) often result in enemies straight up disappearing.
There is no "A-Life" world population/simulation system like in the original games. Instead there is a system which attempts to mimick the output of it by spawning "events" around you. For example "a group of loners fight a group of bandits", "a loner is downed by a pack of dogs", "a bloodsucker attacks a group of soldiers" etc. Once you realize this, the game feels incredibly artificial in comparison. This new system is also likely way overtuned at the moment, resulting in hilarious situations where you barely had time to recover from a bloodsucker encounter before the game spawned two more right on top of you, after which you were immediately assaulted by a pack of dogs. It really is relentless sometimes and reloading a save will result in vastly different scenarios because the events are not persistent or deterministic in any way.
Oh, and there are no binoculars, probably because the spawn range for enemies and events is something like 60 meters so seeing further would be pointless. We truly are living in the future.

So yes, it is slop and to be honest I think it's just a question of time before "the community" turns on the game. I feel like an idiot for buying it.

i have been fucking around the last hour finding the journalist stash, when this game works it works. just had a fight against a pack of dogs and looters and climbed some tower and im just raining hell on everything. badass.
the intro fucking sucked and the story is nothing so far

The exploration is probably the best part of the game to me.
I came upon a bridge that looked like the one from SoC, and it was lol. I wandered over to the starter village and its a nice trip down memory lane.

I really hope they can shore up the issues the game has because there is definitely a good game there, it jsut need polishing.

Welcome to the Zone.
Bullshit jank 2007, Bullshit jank 2008, bullshit jank 2009 and now we have bullshit jank 2024. You'd think this latest entry would be super ground breaking given where it came from but instead it comes up short in a lot of regards. "There's nothing like Stalker!" is not a phrase you'd hear in relation to this latest entry. 17 years and what has truly changed for the better? A bigger map? Less features?
It needs to be Cyberpunk 2077'd, but I highly doubt GSC are going to put in the work to fix it.
I remembered reading their NFT plans back in late 2021 and promptly wrote the game off as a cash grab. I'd be surprised if they actually fixed the game up and made it proper but from what I've been seeing I doubt it'll be getting overhauled. Although CyberPunk did actually defy my expectations with how much they fixed I feel like it was a bit of too little too late in a lot of regards.
which are almost a 1:1 recreation, including the downright questionable balancing of artifact stats
I've heard / witnessed the artifacts were really shittily balanced and weren't even worth the effort most times. Did they fix that recently? The rest of your assessment sounds spot on from what I've seen, multiple enemies spawning in the same spot then staring at a wall, bad mutant ai and bullet sponges galore, etc. It's a shame because the Stalker universe is so ripe for ideas and the best we got was FarCry: Stalker Edition plus severe bugs. Would have been cool to see literally anything the prior games didn't have innovation wise and I don't mean just simple mantle mechanics (which the game lacks anyways) or animations.
