Silent Hill

I played the remake (pirated, of course). I did play the original, but my attachment to it isn't as strong as some people here. Before I get into some autistic things, I will say, the atmosphere in the original's 'normal' world is stronger than it is in the remake, but in the remake the 'other' world manages to feel very oppressive in its presentation and I hated being in it (in a good way), which is par for the course considering Bloober team's track record of intricate walking sims up until this point. I think they do deserve a meagre amount of praise in producing something serviceable. I think because I found their entire catalogue lacking, my expectations for this were exceedingly low, and when coupled with the fact AAA is absolute dogshit and has been for the last few years, when they managed to pull off a 3.5 out of 5 game (maybe a soft 4 out of 5) I was impressed. Granted they were just following the story and sequence of events lain out in a game over 20 years old, but they managed to stick close enough to the recipe with only some charring at the edges.

Melee combat is terrible though if you're fighting anything other than a Lying Figure. And because they weren't able to accurately match the voice acting of the original (Can best be described as 'off' which fits it perfectly) I think James' direction in VA is a combination of apathy and dissociation. Or it could be shit? But I kinda liked it. I can't say the same for Angela and Laura. Angela's disappointing because she was okay but when she needed to nail it (the stairway scene) she kinda botched it. Maria is fine enough but it feels like she has contrasting direction, trying to sound both sultry whilst also not-human.

Now, autism: They got points for not cutting anything out (even if they butchered a couple scenes with bad voice acting) There were some altered things that stood out to me:

Pyramid head's 'dalliance' with the mannequin felt a lot less sexual in its presentation.
In the hospital the hair you use with a bent needle to get the key from the drain has been replaced with medical tubing, so when you do the whole hullabaloo involved in unlocking the intricate chest, James opens it to find it now contains nothing. It still progresses the game though by dropping a convenient tarp covering the angel of the door-door.
The orange juice is in the same room as the chute. I guess to justify James deciding to chuck it down since it's right there?
Speaking of chutes, James has to put his arm down a few more holes than he did in the original, and you have to confirm each movement with A. Despite this, there was no easy scare of having someone/something grab him from the other side - missed opportunity.
In the apartment where a dead James is watching a tv with no signal, since you can move your camera now, his corpse is covered with a bloody blanket. The shoes and jeans are identical to the ones James is wearing so it's likely it's still a dead James, it's just not as creepy now. James thinks twice before pulling the sheet off and leaves it.
First playthrough I got 'In Water'. I was confused by this since I always kept fully topped up on health (Which isn't hard, the game is very generous with health items, but stringy with ammo). I don't know how endings are decided in the remake.
You only fight 1 Flesh Lip in the hospital instead of the 2-3 you fight in the original. After you kill 1, a 2nd one grabs you with its feet knocking you out and sending you to the other world. Its boss fight is recycled for phase 2-3 of the final boss (which means there is still technically 3 in the game?). This is what I mean by adding their own 'flair'.
You don't fight pyramid head in a flooded room in the hotel, it's instead a special room dedicated to the encounter.
In the prison, there's no invisible prisoners like the original.
Instead of eating pizza at the bowling place, Eddie is instead stuffing his face with melted ice cream at the movie theatre along with Laura.
You encounter 1 Abstract Daddy in the whole game and it's a boss fight. Angela's room no longer has the 'rods' moving back and forth in their holes. Facsimile's of the holes are still there though.
Speaking of Angela, she gets several new scenes. Same can't be said for Eddie, who keeps his original scenes and gets nothing new. Laura also gets nothing new, other than maybe one scene of her running away from the hospital in the other world. Mariah also gets a couple of scenes if you count her extended dialogues in the world (There's the original dress Easter egg as well as one Born from a wish reference when you stop by Baldwin mansion).
Instead of getting whacked off the roof with his blade, pyramid head instead grabs James by the neck and chucks him down an elevator shaft. (Good jump scare though)
Mandarins get more appearances. You fight one as a boss of sorts in the hotel. It's not stuck under the floor like in the original. They're also patrolling the halls when James gives up all his equipment to take the staff elevator.
There is no damage or speed difference between the wooden plank and pipe and no variation in movesets. In fact, you only equip one at a time (James uses his board to lock a gate and picks up the pipe from a car hood)
You pick up the radio and plank in a house instead of the tunnel blockage like in the original (Side note: The reveal of the lying figure is weaker here since the fog doesn't obscure him as much)
James no longer outright states the purpose of pyramid head during the final confrontation.
Some puzzles were removed or altered (Prison saw the brunt of this as the entire area was expanded. There exist Easter eggs showing the remains of these puzzles though, like the horseshoe and wax one)

Considering this game's success (Not sure about numbers but reviews are glowing) I predict a remake of 1, then a remake of 3.

Konami is trying to once again make a movie based on Silent HIll
Well it original run of movies took the story of silent hill, tossed it into the bin, and made it about the invasion of Iraq, and how whites (portrayed as Christians) are actually the real evil.

I wonder how it will turn out in the modern world. Perhaps more shilling and tiktok is needed for Marie. She is duck facing a selfie in the park.

Crazy as well when you think both Resident Evil and Silent Hill movies kinda side step the original games in their series, then create a brand new pointless story no one cares about with characters no one cares about.

So should I play the fanmade SH2 Enhanced Edition or the remake for my first experience? I've only played Origins and 1 so far and liked both, so I don't mind the graphics. (Though to be honest, I feel the pre-rendered cutscenes from the original look better than the remake cutscenes)

The Enhanced PC version of 2 is pretty great. Runs well and looks great for the age of the game. You can always try the remake at a later date, once any patches and shit come out to fix any issues it might have.

Silent Hill 2 (original) is a work of art and I don't say that lightly. As others in the thread attest, almost everything about it is an uncompromising vision of what Team Silent was looking to accomplish. They told the story they wanted to tell, exactly as they intended.

Remake hits the cliffnotes but tacks onto it things that were never there, and lacks the artistry and sophistication of the original. It's like a reproduction of a play. It plays better/easier. It is not inherently bad, but clumsy and lacking soul.

The original Silent Hill 2 is Mary and the Remake is Maria.

It really bothers me that the rape themes in the game have been excised about as thoroughly as they could be without fully removing the character of Angela. Are we at the point where we simply cannot discuss rape in popular media, no matter how abstract the presentation? It's not like these scenes treated the issue lightly, or were presented as erotic.

Playing the first part and there is a lot of this. It almost feels like someone put Downpour and SH 2 in a blender. The first monster fight is in a building, instead of the overpass. I played a bit of the first about a week or so ago.

The camera is a downgrade to the original lol.
This reminds me when I was happy to see the "retro" UI option where it disables everything since they kept James looking at interactive objects, only bad thing is that not only is it harder to tell what hes looking at from that angle but turning the camera also turns his body/head around so its even more confusing.

My chief criticism of the game (so far) is that it continues Homecoming and Downpour's progression away from everything which distinguished Team Silent's work, while wearing 2's skin. As someone said elsewhere: Blooper exceeded everyone's expectations by producing a 3.5, instead of the 0 all the horrendous teasers and marketing made the game out to be. However, I fear this may result in Blooper being rewarded with a second chance to produce the 0 we all know they're capable of (@The Man With No Name referring to the game as a cliffnotes remake is right on the money).

They kept the dialogue. During the boss fight you hear the father speak via TVs and it just sounds like run of mill abusive dad (sans rape). I think the best way to describe this game when it comes to its themes is 'toned down'. Suicide is seldom brought up (There's few if any suggestions from the world itself that James should kill himself). During the hallway scene (the one on fire) the line of dialogue where James states he would never kill himself is absent. Also the events you could encounter in-game that push James towards suicide (Radio broadcast, message on the wall, etcetera) are either absent or have no bearing. Angela sounds less hysterical overall, sounding more resigned and sad rather than unhinged. Eddie isn't throwing up as hard in the toilet, and is less manic with his gesturing (Although I think out of the cast Eddie was the most true to the original, but he also had less overall time than the others so mistakes would be harder to notice.) and even Mariah is less overt about her advances.

Yeah, looking at the Remake, I’m not gonna call it bad or anything like that. Heck, on the whole, it does look at the very least somewhat enjoyable. It definitely could’ve been worse, and generally is pretty solid.

But the things that have been changed, no matter how minor, do take away a lot of the themes and subtlety that the original game had. Sure, the remake is technically more polished and has better combat mechanics, but the edges have been sanded off, and as a result, is less engaging on the whole.

So while not bad overall, the Remake still can’t compete with the original.

and even Mariah is less overt about her advances.
Maria has been thoroughly muted. They are treating her as a Girlfriend Experience, when she's part of James's self imposed punishment.
In the original she's as seductive as she is abrasive and needy. She shifts back and forth from love bombing to making accusations.
The first time you meet her in the original she accuses you of not really loving Mary at all and only afterwards James decides to take her along. In the remake that line just seems to be missing and instead James agrees to find a lover's hangout and... go on a date? Baffling.

Thanks for the very thorough breakdown of all this, was wondering about it.

Regarding your comment about the In Water ending, it's possible to get without having poor health for long periods of time in the original (more difficult obviously). Examining the knife and interacting with a handful of optional content in the environment can raise the In Water likelihood value, which seems probable since you were very thorough in your playthrough (at least I get that impression from your writing). Assuming you didn't spent ton of time with Maria or any of the other hallmarks of getting her ending, it should be doable to get the ending you got even in the original, albeit rather unlikely. Now it is fully possible that they changed the code, especially if you did none of the other actions typically associated with the In Water ending, but at least as a baseline the fact that you got the ending isn't a surefire indication that they did.
