Spider-Man into the Spiderverse

I'm a real sucker for small details in animated movies, from the little exclamation marks, to the out of focus objects the Spiderpeople "thwip" themselves on, it really satisfies me on an almost primal level.

To see these things occur in a movie already saturated with creative drive and effort satisfies me on a primal level.
Like how Peter B. Parker consistently rings door bells using his web shooters, or how Miles' venom strikes leave an outline on the victim's body.

Have a song from an impulse-buy album:

Btw, was it just me, or did Scorpion and Lady Octopus bite the dust in a rather brutal manner? I get glossing over it is kind of funny, but getting hit by a bus/mallet and having the dimensional warp tear you apart is pretty brutal.

It didn't seem like Peter knew her at all, though. Of course, it is a movie about alternate dimensions, so maybe he didn't.
From what I understand, Burrito Parker’s history is supposed to be identical to the 616 comic’s history, with the exception of the events of One More Day. So in theory everything with Gwen should’ve happened too.

Though I did notice that Gwen never says her last name directly in front of Peter, and the period when she tells her backstory Peter is pretending to be asleep, so that could serve as an explanation as to why there’s no major reaction from him.

I got the impression that the older Peter was based on the Tobey Maguire films, and I've read that they considered having him do the voice. When you think of him like that, then it makes sense for him not to react much to Gwen. She didn't die in his universe.

For me, personally, this movie really feels like an unofficial epilogue of some sorts for the Sam Raimi movies. And I mean that as a really good thing.

I would not be shocked if I heard that they had originally approached Tobey Maguire to do the voicework, honestly.

Like, on one hand I know that it would have been kinda weird to address Peter and Gwen's whole.... situation.... considering the sheer age gap between them and the facts that there wasn't any time for it, but another part of me really wanted to see their relationship explored and how interacting with what is essentially the "ghost" of someone you loved very dearly would affect them.

I'm just a sucker for angst and it feels like kind of a wasted opprotunity.

It just won the Oscar for Best Animated and rightfully beat out the lackluster Disney shit of last year. Well deserved.
Holy shit, now there's a win I didn't expect. The movie had practically everything going against it in the Academy's eyes, such as being capeshit and not being produced by Disney (well not Disney's animation specifically).

I don't typically care much for Oscar wins, but I agree with this one.

A large part of that is because of the whole "THE OSCARS ARE TOO WHITE!" complaints. And having WiR2 or Incredibles 2 would piss off both, the people wanting a more diverse ceremony and the people getting tired of Disney's hold of the "Best Animated Feature" category.

I'm surprised it won. It's well deserved too. I'm not even a Spider Man fan and I loved it.

honestly it deserved it. wreck it Ralph 2 was just so bad I wanted somebody to beat Disney and their sycophants.

I torrented a cam copy and I was shocked at how bad it was. It was even more plot-less than the original. It's no better than an exploitation film where all the good shit is in the trailer.

Like, I feel the only reason it and Incredibles 2 (itself very lackluster) even made it into the nominations is because they're Disney films and are included by default.

Spider-Verse deserved the win, and is certainly the right direction in Sony redeeming themselves from Emoji Movie.

I mean I wouldn't even be surprised if it won due to the race angle, but at least in the movie's defense, it's not really a thing of the plot. And everything else works well for me that I'm pretty ok with it getting recognition. Honestly even a turd winning would've been an improvement Ralph 2 was just so autistic.

I noticed how the topic of race was pretty much not mentioned with this film or its marketing. The most I heard were some of the voice actors in one interview saying a sentence or two about "representation." That was it, though. And when they talked about that representation, they didn't pull a Brie Larson by alienating everyone else.

It's as if the film didn't need identity politics to tell people to love it. It's as if the film earned its reputation for just being really freaking good. Funny how that works!

@2odastream I couldn't agree more. Miles Morales was always an underwhelming character to me. I never got the hype. That's because Miles was always just "Black Peter Parker." The proof is obvious: The Peter Parker we see in the MCU utilizes a lot of Miles' stuff from the comics (like the best friend), yet many comic book fans say that it's the most "accurate" version of Peter Parker we've seen on the big screen. That, to me, showcases how zero creativity was put into Miles' characterization ...

... Until this movie, that is. This is one of those rare instances where the movie completely outshines the comics in every way imaginable. When someone mentions Miles Morales to me, I think of this movie; not the comics. This movie made me a Miles fan.
