Tech you miss/ new tech trends you hate - ok boomers

I purposely keep my phone as bare bones and minimal as I can possibly get away with
So do I. At least half the crap that came preinstalled on my phone goes unused, and I prefer not to install apps unless I absolutely have to - even if it means people think I'm the oddball because I don't have SnapChat, Instagram, or whatever the fad app of the moment happens to be. Besides, I find it easier to browse sites on a mobile browser versus downloading a bloated app that may have less functionality and more security issues.

Esp when some shitty app wants to get your notifications, location, access to your storage, etc.
I don't remember what app it was, but one recently required access to my camera and microphone even though what it was doing had absolutely zero need to do so. Shit like this bolsters the perception that phones spy on us as much as possible.

Thread tax: I was trying to browse something the other day and I got one of those screens requiring me to accept or reject cookies. It was broken in that whatever option I selected wouldn't close the popup and let me resume browsing the page. Between that and Youtube's latest shenanigans, it's enough to make one long for days when one could web surf without being snooped on or tracked (all that much).

Good. Remember brother, the reson this shit is there is not because of over concerned parents or overreaching EU regulation; it's because corpos trying to nigger every bit of data out of you in every possible way. Remember what they took from you

The headings being on the left of the page is a nice touch.

Thread tax: when Youtubers just put their socials on the description for every video. What's this video about? Let's read the description. Nothing but links. Great. Or when supercuts of music don't have time stamps of what songs play when.

If Target's ad science was that "good" 10+ years ago, with just that girl's purchase history and some demographic data, imagine what ad companies/retailers are able to do with your data now that they have thousands more data points.
Eh, at some point there's diminishing returns. There's a lot that can be figured out with this tracking data, but not everything. And there's been an influx of diversity hires and just general brain drain over time - I don't think the current code for this kind of thing has really gotten exponentially better, they've just gotten greedier with how they collect and use it.

Is this like one of those old USB Rubber Duckies? The little plastic ducks around a micro board (Arduino?) that you would program with a payload by specifying keystrokes?
Same idea. It's actually a Raspberry Pi on my WiFi to provide a user interface for unlocking the safe and choosing which password to send.

I miss when things didn't depend on an app on your phone. It's gotten to the point where certain retail stores' employees will not help you with anything, even getting something out of lockup, unless you "check in" using their mobile app. Some restaurants no longer have paper menus, and instead want you to use your phone to go to either their "menu app" or their mobile site (I finally ran into one of these) - some places are even worse and put ads in these.

I purposely keep my phone as bare bones and minimal as I can possibly get away with, and when places tell me I cannot receive any kind of customer service unless I download their app, then I can simply live without it. If a restaurant has no paper menus and requires you to download their app or look at their mobile site while I'm sitting right there in the place, then I'll just not go there, and eat somewhere else. It's really not a big deal. These are just two examples, but you get my point I think.

I would consider menus to be a part of the service in restaurants. They put out the menus, take away the menus, and so forth. That's part of what makes a tip a tip and not just an extra tax.

If they want to bring me a paper printout or a tablet so I can order, that's one thing, but if I wanted to do everything myself I would just get takeout.

We did? Where did it go? My elderly mother still has cable, it hasn't gone anywhere except to become far less popular then it used to be, and all the ads targetting boomers and older with health insurance and home equity scams along with gimmick bathtubs and shyster lawyers.
I mentioned this in another thread but when it comes to cable, it's not the "is the service still available" but rather the all-inclusiveness of it.

In 2005, if you heard about a new TV show and you had full cable, then you could immediately start watching it (unless it was HBO and they didn't have much in the way of original programming--it was movies and porn, depending on the time of day you turned it on).

That's just not the case anymore.

"Just put a fully fledged OS in bro. It's not the 90s anymore bro. It's too hard bro, why go through all that effort? We'll just fix it later in software bro. Trust me, it will be easy bro."

You know what? I have two Fords, and while the steering isn't like this, the heat, wipers, air conditioning and radio all have a similar delay where inputs take a half second to register.

God, recruitment companies having a 'cutesy' third party "quiz" program is annoying.

I have to spend 30 mins doing some shitty useless quiz because a HR person needs to justify their wage. I'm sure doing a 3rd grade math quiz will determine if I'm not a pajeet who lies on their application about their english aptitude.

Dance, code-monkey, dance! You want your banana, don't you?

When the ads take over whatever website you're on. It's especially intrusive on mobile with the limited screen space.
AdBlocker Ultimate is your friend. Install your friend's browser extension and be free of that bullshit.

(can't help you with mobile, I don't browse web on tiny brix.)

Some auto makers have put HVAC controls into their own dedicated screen, below the main infotainment screens, but that screams as looking cheap. The 2025 Infiniti QX80 is one example of this, and the 2025 Audi RS Q8 is another example:

The other crime about the new QX80, is that the V8 was replaced by a Twin-Turbo V6 instead. Auto makers seem to love to kill off V8s, for Turbo V6s that are less reliable and have VERY slightly better fuel economy, because of stupid reasons such as tightening CARB requirements, and increased taxes on larger engine displacement cars in countries such as China. Toyota getting rid of their V8s to replace them with their Twin-Turbo V6 has also bit them in the ass hard, as the current-gen Lexus LS500 has seen numerous reports of excessive oil consumption, piston failures, and even complete engine failures. The failures with that engine have gotten so bad, that Toyota had to recall the new Tundra and Lexus LX, which also use that same engine.

Windows 11, all of it is dogshit. The Mica material is a step backward from Windows 7 (but at least everything isn’t blindingly bright à la windows 10). The worst thing about it is the taskbar, I have never wanted KDE’s inconsistent taskbar button length on Windows, but now that’s the only option. I wish I could put the bar on the left side or on the top, alas, that’s not what Sandeep the UI guy wants so I’m outta luck there.

The whole thing feels like a shitty KDE Plasma theme.
