Is it ego-eccentricity or just cluelessness/one-track mind? Although the fact that he immediately switched back to Kacey argues in your favour. I would be more inclined to let him plead stupidity if he forgot about Kacey entirely and started doing something else when Barb left.

To me the weirder thing is letting Kacey clearly hear Barb without Barb's knowledge. He was a little rude to Kacey granted. But it could be defended a little by pointing out that he may have expected a couple minute conversation and it got out of hand, or that Kacey could have hung up at any time. It seems like a much bigger violation against Barb. If I were having a fairly personal conversation, and it turned out that the person I was talking to was letting someone eavesdrop on every word I would be really outraged. If I were left holding the line a too long I would be a little annoyed.

My guess is that he expected Barb would only take a minute or two of his time, but between his fucked up perception of time and not wanting to "insult" Barb or provoke a reaction from her by telling her to wait a few minutes until he was done with his gf, he decided to just stay there and leave Kacey hanging. At some point he probably forgot Kacey was still on the phone.

Even keeping him locked up like Sloth from "The Goonies" isn't too crazy. Chris has shown that he cannot peacefully co-exist with the nice, normal people out there, and is just an aggrssive nuisance. Barb doesn't have the energy or wherewithal to deal with his crap anymore ( not that she ever did before) and it puts her mind at ease, knowing her little pumpkin is safe and sound at home, where he belongs. Whew, never thought Id be defening anything Barb ever did!
Well, it just shows how she never thought her child was worth hard work on her part. When he was younger, she and Bob pretended he didn't have any significant problems and just let him putter around wherever he liked. Assuming his trouble dealing with the outside world even is the reason she's caging him up (I think it's more about her clutching him like a possession), she doesn't want to think of a humane solution, she just decided to lock him up and say "you can't pretend to be a real boy anymore". And although she might die tomorrow, it's equally possible she'll live for another ten years. Is her pet just supposed to live like a subhuman prisoner for the rest of his mother's life, just because she's too tired to care?

Oh your absolutely right on some level Alec. Barb was and is, dumb, selfish hillbilly trash who never put her sons interest ahead of her own. Im just saying as it stands now, there isn't much she can do. It really does reflect poorly on Bob n' Barb that they did not try to develop some contingency plan about Chris' life, in case either of them should die, or if Chris was unable to find work on his own

To be fair to Bob, he made sure Chris got a high-school and community college diploma, and then got him on the tugboat. I think part of his motivation was specifically that. Going into the future Chris had a small income and had some qualifications to try to earn more, if he was willing and capable.

As for Barb, I agree with you.

Also, Barb said she had been through quite a number of jobs, which made me wonder if her vindictiveness/childishness was one reason why she kept changing jobs?

She probably didn't change jobs voluntarily that often. I'm willing to bet she wore out her welcome in a number of places.

Also, didn't she retire because her last job was modernizing in a hurry and she didn't care to take the time to learn how to operate the new electronic equipment?

Who would write her a letter of recommondation? She can't have been fired from all those jobs... she never would have been able to get one after the 3rd or 4th...

She'd probably be healthier if she didn't retire at age 55 right ( the bare minimum age you are allowed to retire in the USA)? The biggest surprise is that she had other old ladies at her retirement party. I wouldn't have thought anyone would come

I wonder at what point Bob realised he'd fucked up the remainder of his life up by throwing his lot in with Barb. Barb strikes me as the sort who acts fairly normal when everything's going ok, but flips her shit at the slightest ridiculous thing.

She probably didn't get fired. She probably managed to get by in work by not being a fuck up. No doubt that if her attitude was the same as it is now, her employers and coworkers probably tolerated her at best.

Currently I work with someone who is incredibly nice, but absolutely refuses to learn new technology because she thinks she won't get it. It's really frustrating.

I think her brief (half-hour) interaction with Ivy is probably as good a glimpse as any into how Barb functions around other people, at least in a work environment. Perhaps a little too finicky, but otherwise efficient and fully capable of civility and friendliness.

Bob did. The tugboat was Bob's plan. He never planned for his white trash wife to siphon off of it as well. He knew Chris was going to be unable to hold down anything, I would bet that the old man knew this after Wendy's. I wonder happened there that finally convinced Bob that his son was, well, Chris.

Probably had a sit-down with the manager in an attempt to get Chris his job back. Result must have been eye-opening.

I always thought the whole conversation was a ploy to get Chris to clear out some of his and Bob's stuff so Barb could get more hoard.

I hope this is not true. There are many people eagerly awaiting the day Bob's clothing (and greenhouse) goes up for sale on eBay :(

It's probably all ashes in the wind, man.

There has to be resentment in Barb that Bob is gone and she is left with Chris. And she buries that resentment in Barbage, all her anger, all her rage, all buried with Barbage, and eventually there will be an avalanche of Barbage that will bury her.

The Barbage has been there for years, since long before Bob's passing. Her resentment goes far deeper than that.

I'll say this about the Chandlers. Both Bob and Barb were/are assholes. Both Bob and Barb were estranged from or disowned by their entire families. (pretty much) If all of your relatives want nothing whatsoever to do with you, that says something about the kind of person you are. Bob and Barb were two drunks who ended up getting pregnant, probably accidently, although Barb might have gotten pregnant to prevent Bob from leaving her.

The reason that Bob and Barb stayed together even though they didn't like each other was that all they had were each other. Both had previously failed relationships/marriages, families that wanted nothing to do with them, etc. Together, Bob and Barb could pool their meager resources and survive throughout their retired years. Chris was just an additional factor keeping Bob and Barb together.

Bob and Barb also shared the same persecution complex, unwillingness to take or teach responsibility, many of the same delusions, and an attitude of "take whatever you can, give nothing back" to the world. Chris was born with Autism, but he was raised in a sort of isolation by two selfish, thoughtless neurotic assholes who stayed together for convenience. It was a weird dynamic that kept the Chandler household together, but it worked, and it helped produce the manchild that we all know today.

I just need to point out that they married in 1980 while Chris was born in 1982, so their marriage wasn't a shotgun wedding (so to speak) However it is entirely possible that Barb lied and told Bob she was pregnant to reel him in, OR she was pregnant already and miscarried (one reason why Barb maybe told Chris he was a miracle)
