Yes, the main point of her book "Gender Troubles" is that gender is performative. Not just performed, more that gender itself exists as a result of performance.

To an extent she has a point, in that it's only because 15th century nobles started wearing britches instead of robes that trans women now equate wearing dresses/skirt go spinny with performing femininity/gender euphoria. There's no reason why those clothes are gendered that way, or why it's amusing to see a burly man in a dress, other than the gendered expectations that have been created (and likewise why it was once shocking for a woman to wear trousers while it's entirely unremarkable now and not even seen as unfeminine). Gender roles aren't fixed and change across time and culture. This ties in a bit with Simone de Beauvoir's line that one is not born, but becomes, a woman - women are forced to perform a role and society places expectations on women for how they should behave (more relevant in the 50s when she was writing, the way of being a woman is something forced upon women). You can even see it if a guy wears Cuban heeled silver Chelsea boots, sheer mesh shirts, chaps and a leather cap - you'd assume he's gay even though he's only wearing men's clothing, because "camp gay man" is a performed "gender" role, yet Japanese visual kei rockers in the 80s weren't thought to be gay or unmasculine by other Japanese people when they dressed like that.

The bit where Butler drinks the pomo kool aid is when she argues that if there were no expectations for a difference between men and women - no gender roles to perform - then there would be no such thing as gender. There's no difference between males and females, there's only behavioural differences as a result of performative gender. Nobody has a gender until someone else assigns them one and then that person begins performing the gendered roles, kinda like how a view couldn't be beautiful if there'd never been humans to conceptualise the idea of beauty. And since the performance of gender isn't fixed and is entirely socially constructed, it's effectively meaningless to say someone is or isn't a woman because that's only true within the confines of one subjective worldview.

This post modernist take on gender is exactly why there's now arguments like "some women have penises" or "Gender expression =/= Gender identity, so I'm a woman who doesn't take hormones or shave, now let me into the changing room".

Between the bizarro world equivalent of conversion therapy for gays and lesbians, the blatant indoctrination of children by obvious sex pests, the totalitarian nature of compulsory language and the fact that the overwhelming majority of these people are fucking deranged, it's honestly hard to pick just one, so allow me to put on my puzzle piece hat and write an essay about this. Pardon the occasional minor power level.

Point one: These people are engaging in the exact same behavior they were trashing the other side of the isle over for decades, by basically telling gay men and lesbians that they aren't -really- gay, they're just a woman in a man's body or vice versa and in some cases, putting them through extremely intense indoctrination to make them believe this, with mixed results. I feel that this is probably no small part of the 41%, a demographic already more likely to commit suicide being given, forcefully in some instances, all the more reason to do so. As a (begrudging) gay man, seeing this was the first thing that really tipped me off about the whole tranny movement being a nightmare. The fact that they seem intent on forcing gays and lesbians to SUCK THE DICK, BIGOT!!!! was probably the thing that ultimately led me down the troon hate rabbit hole as well.

Point two: It doesn't take an especially observant person to see how much the "trans community" is disturbingly interested in indoctrinating children. I don't subscribe to the "gays and trannies reproduce via molestation" theory because the numbers just don't work out, but I can't deny that both communities seem to have a serious issue keeping their hands and values off of the underaged, and it seems far more prevalent among the troons than the gays. If you need to scoop up kids before they even hit puberty and fill their head with garbage (and god willing, you're not filling anywhere else with anything else) so they don't think you look like a halloween decoration, your ideology fucking sucks.

Point three: I guess this is the Jordan Peterson point, but compelling anyone to speak in any way is completely unacceptable to me. Policing language is one of the gravest sins a person or government can take part in, and doing so is a very short walk from full blown totalitarianism, which the world is just barely managing to hold at bay for the moment. We can't let troons be the reason any pretense of liberty collapses.

Point four: Trannies are absolutely fucking intolerable to be around. I've had the misfortune of having several friends transition, and they become either pretentious faggy overly political nutjobs who put in absolutely no effort to pass, they completely go off the deep end and get hooked on whatever the opiate or amphetamine of choice is these days, or their weird fetish and fixation with being a woman becomes so powerful that they're incapable of talking about anything else. I'd have a bit more sympathy for the very few people who have legit gender dysphoria and seem to be able to lead normal lives if they were more vocal about telling obvious perverts or people "transitioning" for political purposes to go pound sand.

Point five: I already don't feel especially great about being gay, but the fact that I'm automatically assumed to be a leftist tranny loving degenerate if I'm outed boils my fucking blood. There's no individual in the LGBT hivemind and even if you wholly disagree with the majority of what they think, feel and say, you're still lumped in with them. It's getting to the point where celibacy is getting more appealing than trying to find the mythical cute guy in a skirt who hasn't been corrupted by trans/LGBT ideology. Wish the nazi femboy meme was real.

All of this is, of course, ignoring the fact that they're a fucking man in a dress and no amount of titty skittles, unethical surgery or larping is going to change that.

The process of peak transing started when people started talking about "sex assigned at birth." I'm old enough to remember when people admitted that their biological sex was different from their gender identity, but did not deny that their sex was what it was.

I came back to this thread because I met a 10 (?) year old boy the other day who was wearing a girl's shirt and pink sweatpants. At first I assumed he was a flamboyant gay boy. Then I realized that he was wearing a padded training bra, and I've been fucked up about it since. The really messed up thing is that he was in a group of kids and the girls in the group had not yet developed. So there was a boy with the appearance of breasts alongside girls without them. For some reason this has me fucked up more than all of the trans adults I've ever met.

After watching my sister spend years making everyone around her walk on eggshells, adopt plenty of special pronouns and other BS, then after over a decade of this come up with every excuse under the sun why she hadnt started transitioning into her "happy smol gai boi uwu".
