Anime/Manga - Discuss Japanese cartoons and comics here; NO CULTURE WAR DOOMPOSTING!

I am really sick of tards claiming Hiroyuki Sawano is some kind of mastermind composer. All of his tracks are the anime equivalent to "my heart will go on" from titanic and don't sound that much different than any other anime.

The only difference I found is that there was far less contextually tone deaf usage of his music in the anime it was used in. Which wasn't even up to him. Nothing like generic J-pop blaring during a funeral scene or some other autistic combination of tone deafness over the last decade of anime.
I wouldn't go that far, just when he does his thing (as @Oddjob OTP said bombastic epic) it tends to come out pretty great. he also usually manages to get peak singers for his songs, which helps too (the aimer version of through my blood is fucking 10/10, or his LOGH OP/EDs). his style can sound a little bit similar tho, I can understand people not liking or getting sick of it.

single release of that on your mark remix never ever reeeeeeeeeeeeeee

also bit of a cheeky shitposter

Super cub...
mah nigga

shii would've fucking died of hypothermia after spending that much time in the water and then fucking drive around in wet clothes, triggered my autism hard.

MHA is surprisingly getting some sort of redemption arc in 2023, because the latest chapters had been actually good after the racism arc. If MHA ends strong that would be great, it still wouldn't take away from the stronghold of mediocrity, but if it ends with a bang it would be better than nothing.

Also latest Spy x Family chapter was pretty good.

I also plan to start One Piece soon.

As for anime, I need to catch up with Urusei Yatsura and I should probably watch some other stuff, but probably after finishing some movies.

Creator of Cowboy Bebop had these to say regarding the Netflix show and his time in Hollywood

It makes me happy he slandered it cause I remembered the Netflix shills saying he approved of it, well they have an egg on their face now.

So far, Eiyuuou is my surprise hit this season. Decently animated but enjoying the premise. Nagatoro and Tomo-chan good for what they are and do what they're supposed to do. Still enjoying Urusei Yatsura and this week's episode was the best one so far. Revengers is what I expected and continues to peak my interest. Ningen Fushin had an interesting premise but kind of abandoned it in episode 2. The animation is also pretty janky

Ayakashi triangle and Nier were both delayed due to the chink virus since they do some of the animation in China. Still enjoying Nier but Ayakashi is just "BUY THE DVD/BLUE-RAY"

Finally decided to cave and watch Cyberpunk Edgerunners…

Nigga I’m only in the first episode and David’s mama already fucking dies :story: . Man, what the hell?
Okay, stopped at episode four. Wouldn’t stop laughing at stupid shit, so overall I guess I’m having fun with it and trying to keep whatever expectations I had earlier grounded. Any of you guys played the game before?

By the way, related about Ayakashi Triangle nicknamed "trans yuri", I believecI found what could be "trans yaoi", dig this plot

Sumi is in love with Mitsuru, but he doesn't seem to be interested in her as a woman. Determined to look more sexy and mature, Sumi takes an experimental growth hormone that her scientist father has been developing.

However, the medicine backfires. Instead of changing into a buxom femme fatale, Sumi changes into a beautiful young man! She–he–is so gorgeous and so cool that even Mitsuru begins to take notice. Although the new situation with Mitsuru is imperfect, Sumi discovers that she can be closer to her crush: they can talk man-to-man. Yet, being Mitsuru's friend also has a downside, particularly when he reveals that he is in love with a girl in his grade!

I've been keeping up with it and I'm thinking of dropping it myself. Episode 4 still has jank animation but now they added a new party member who's a sentient sword that sounds like an old man but can also turn into an androgynous child and its gimmick is that it can fuse characters together. This whole thing got wackier than I had expected from the premise, though maybe I'll give it one more episode to decide.

I finished Bocchi, and being completely honest even though I was very impressed with Chainsaw Man, Bocchi is by a mile my favorite anime I watched recently. I loved the characters and how they worked off each other, I loved how accurate it was for the real life of musicians, I legit really enjoy the music itself, and the animation was so goofy but everything flowed just right.
What I would say shocked me is how well the show took the really overdone character of "socially awkward literally me girl" and made it work so well. And it made sense, Bocchi wasn't a girl with some magical talent for guitar, all she did for three years was play guitar eight hours a day. Bocchi's crazy thoughts, while funny, would be something someone with crippling anxiety could probably relate to. And her bandmates understood her issues and while they do try to help her, they also try to treat her a little carefully than they do to each other. It made her feel more real than other characters that are the same type.
And, this is gay but I'll admit it, it inspired me to finally pick up music again because it reminded me of all the parts about playing that I enjoyed when I was a teen. Obliviously it wasn't all an anime that got me back to practicing, but it kind of tipped it over the edge.
In short, Bocchi is to music as Baki is to lifting.

Do I watch the NANA anime or read the manga?

The latest chapter of Soredemo Ayumu wa Yosetekuru was both cool and cute at the same time:

I think I also may have learned some French along the way. (Though, I probably may have said some words with the wrong dialect.)

The translators were doing the usual "substituting English with French because Urushi was speaking English in the Japanese version" thing.

The new trailer for sailor moon cosmos is out, and it looks amazing. Personally, I'm angry. Toei can overproduce all these terrible show, yet they can't pay homage to one of the most recognizable brands in history by producing multiple episodes. Sailor stars was also the most watched season in SM history probably because Takaeuchi had much more creative control in the final season. I have a strong feeling they will butcher the ending in order to encourage fans not to ask for new, original manga.

But will the Starlights be men or women? And will that cause a social media shit storm from...you know? And might it cause them to treat Takeuchi the way most folks treat Rowling?

It's the same quality as the last two "movies" and I'm sick of this shit. The Dragon Ball Z/Super and One Piece movies at least look like actual fucking movies in terms of quality and cinematography, as do all those goddamn Pokémon movies le gasp, but the Sailor Moon "movies" are literally just TV episodes strung together into 90-minutes and thrown into theaters to produce some easy cash. Digimon Tri was also exactly that, so of course Toei was going to treat Sailor Moon the same way. They don't give a shit about quality, they just want your money.

And it's not just Toei that does this, either, there's so many of these "movies" that don't even look like actual movies in presentation. At least give the impression there's a "budget" with some sense of scale FFS, I'm sick of seeing TV-quality animation being put to the silver screen and calling it a day. Animate it like a cinematic experience, or put it on TV where it belongs.

They're going to be women 100%, no way are they bringing back the gender fluidity from the 90's anime if Takeuchi has any say in the matter.

I never really bothered looking into that controversy though. There have gotta at least be some fans who got butthurt over Takeuchi's claim that only women can be senshi and headcanon the Starlights as trans/non-binary. Same with the old drama over Sailor Uranus.

I’m not here to guilt trip or shame Null for liking or disliking anime. If anything, it’s funny to see his disdain for weebs veers on the line of trolling and being 100% serious. It reminds me of Andy Kaufman in a way.

Still, I actually thought that on the fediverse he said that he liked Lain, while also saying that he liked the anime movie Redline at one point.
Late to this I know but it's even more ironic because the source material for Arrietty is from the Borrowers. As brought to you by Null's second favourite island, the UK.
For a man who hates the British and weebs it's funny that he likes a weeb movie whose origins lie with a British woman. Though given right now a British female author is doing more damage to Trans activism in the UK than anyone else perhaps it's a sign.

has anyone read the manga Daily Angel Densetsu?

for those who dont know, its about Seiichirou Kitano, a student who transfers to a new school and immediately gets treated like he's some kind of monster/delinquent because of his appears. i mean, just look at him.

View attachment 4246726

turns out, Kitano is actually a pretty nice guy. too nice to be honest. but because of his looks, people have branded him a trouble maker since birth and few people want anything to do with him. those that do usually wants to beat him up because rumors of him being some strong fighter and young punks wanting to prove themselves. but because of his good nature, luck, misunderstandings and overall charisma, Kitano suddenly finds himself making a group of friends that slowly but surly, will see him for what he really is. not as a devil, but as an angel.
Been a while but I remember it being okay. Few chapters didn't manage a chuckle or two out of me. The revelation of his parents almost get an actual belly laugh.

Let's talk Escaflowne please. I still haven't seen it yet I have Yakusoku Wa Irenai on my ipod for about 14 years because it is a fucking banger.

I don't know why but it reminds me of the Nord Highland arc in Cold Steel doubly so because giant mechas lmao. I'm totally here for the long blonde haired elf queen though.

Is it good? I know it aired after Eva finished in Japan and bombed. Yes I also know my precious Kirby Morrow was in the original dub and that there was a VERY heavily altered brief run on Fox kids for some reason.

I'm not too big on mecha but the 90s tokyo/medieval type ascetic looks interesting.
Others have already given excellent summaries and I'm definitely not going to match @Kari Kamiya 's endorsement but I'll join the reccomendations. Bittersweet ending but given the other anime I watched at the time was Teknoman it's positively diabetes inducing in contrast.

I've been super meh and the last arc of My Hero Academy but Gentile Criminal coming back to save the day made me smile.
It's enough to make me actually want to watch the anime adaption. So well played author, I guess. But I think there's very few that did not massively enjoy that character so it is unsurprising.
I still don't know if I want Koichi to show up before the series ends as well.
On one hand it might get more people to read vigilantes
On the other, it means shoehorning him when he doesn't need to be there and expose him to the more annoying MHA fans that thankfully dismiss vigilantes for not being canon right now.
I'd rather we get a Vigilantes anime. Because then maybe some people who are too lazy to read a fucking manga would pay attention.
Also because I want to see some of that stuff animated.

I believe there's a recent generic movie out. Weathering With You? Any good?

Honestly I don't care that the last arc isn't amazing. Lemillion coming back as a hero was fan service enough for me to at least say the show didn't absolutely go to the shitter like Naruto, Bleach and Attack On titan did.

Gentile and La brava showing up again is just icing, and honestly all I really ask for is for the final fight to end with UNITED STATES OF SMASH. This series was always cheap ass candy in terms of themes and whatnot anyways. Which is where my big annoyance with that Racism shit suddenly getting shoved in our faces lies.

Just have the good guys punching the shit out of the badguys in entertaining fashion and I would have been fine.

Okay yeah, that particular reappearance was worth the price of admission. And as you say it's nowhere near as bad as many others got...but we aren't finished yet.

The super racism/X-Men rip off plot was hammered in last minute which is a shame. There is stuff that could have been done there and given it involved under used characters would have worked well before the plot acceleration occurred. But it did not and cramming it in then was a bit out of left field.

I suspect we will have entertaining punching. My money is on an All Mighty States Of Smash.
