Wuhan Coronavirus: Megathread - Got too big

Not been keeping up with the thread, but the latest ONS data is out, for Week Ending 15th May 2020.

There's an uptick in deaths, but that is due to the Friday VE day Bank Holiday effectively moving an entire days worth into the next week, So the low point is a 6 day week, and the uptick is 8 days.

The general trend is still OK.

The CCP Virus* is mainly taking people who would have died next winter anyway. Mainly. Not to dismiss anyone's personal loss or suffering,
I made my own calculation of the Age cohort mortality rate. Properly matching data population cohort was hard to come by :
- I had to mangle the data at each end, as the groupings for the very young and very old weren't equivalent.
- I've used the population for the UK , but the deaths are England and Wales. So this underestimates the mortality rate by about 10% of missing Scottish deaths. So this is rough don't quote it.

I forgot to warn you yesterday so let me make a small anouncement: Yesterday ISCIII finally formalized the database and started culling data from all of the autonomies more efficiently. So that has reduced the number of deaths considerably due to multiple factors. (Including, as I told you. People who demonstrably died from something else but got added in due to having covid, which includes (and this is my favourite case by far) 2 people who got ran over by a drunk driver. I know I shouldn't laugh at an accident but "died due to covid after his innards were smeared unto the street by a car collision" has to be the funniest fucking "wait why did we count this?" Moment.) People who were added at first because they were suspicious, and another favourite of mine, people who were added multiple times because of how much our bureaucracy sucks. God save our mess! This means ISCIII is now asking for proper testing of suspected deads so data will probably wobble a few days, but for now, we got a massive downspike. So if you see less dead on the global data, don't worry, it ain't zombies.

I shall not get tested for the ChiCom Flu unless I am very sick and believe I might have it. At that point would likely be headed for the hospital anyway. Otherwise, just an excuse for "them" to drag you off to some confinement facility for "quarantine" any time they please.

Apparently Georgia's having trouble getting contact tracers. Good fucking luck with that. Don't believe there is ANY way to earn the public's trust on this. Believe far more people than have been let on are not cooperating or even answering the phone, if they have Caller ID. Also doubt many who own smartphones will install any sort of ChiCom Flu-spying app. Some, like me, have only flip phones.

And this was Brownsville, Brooklyn this weekend: every Karen is shuddering in fear but will stay silent because that's racist while the mayor waffles on sending the NYPD to round up every Shaniqua and Tyrone that defied him.

It's over, the mayor and governor just don't realize it yet.

Well I guess I was wrong. Spokane was approved for Phase 2 yesterday. I still am not 100% sure what that means, other than previously closed retailers will be able to do curbside pickup. Which is fine for some things, I guess, but when the hell are clothing stores going to go back to normal? Nowhere here is taking returns on clothing, accessories, food, and health/beauty. So you better love those new jeans (can't try them on at the store either, deal with it!) and hope that foundation matches cause you're stuck with it.

I find myself asking why did we bother locking down in when we never did this with ebola-chan? Also do anyone here thinks people exaggerates the affect of corona on the body, considering people have been recovering as of now and half of these deaths are from other illnesses like TB, cancer, and negligence from doctors?
Paul can be exceptional sometimes, but you gotta admit, it's ridiculous how paranoid the government and people alike are with this that they're resorting to using bumper tables....i..

People in WA are already being doxed for filing complaints against "non essential businesses" from remaining open or doing anything they aren't allowed to do. The people who filed them had the option of doing it anonymously, but proudly provided their names, phone numbers, and addresses. Now everyone has access to that information and they are boo hooing hardcore.

The explanation is "the Swedish strategy is 'we can't, it's not possible, we don't want to, it's too complicated, and mistakes can always be blamed on somebody else'" http://archive.md/wip/geXEu96 Corona deaths today. http://archive.md/wip/9v1ff

Like you say, here one says she will have a "dialogue with the regions":

either it's the sniffles so why test or it's serious so test right away. But "we'll start a dialogue and work out this test thing" doesn't work either way.

and the other says about the 100,000 tests

"yes but"

 yes, it would bring too much trouble, let's have a chat and decide what to do in calm and peace :-)

Also it would be nice if explained clearly what tests are they talking about. Those that don't really work and waste everyone's time? or real PCR tests? Oh Sweden...

In the articles quoted in English they also say so many weird things, like the week is short so we didn't test people - again either it's bad then you don't stop over the weekend (equivalent of saying "we treat heart attacks just during office hours") or it's nothing (I need hair-loss shampoo) so come back when I have time and other things.

@EmuWarsVeteran re: the HIV doesn't cause AIDS guy, sounds like a troll but fine, he wants to get transfusions from HIV (+) people, let him, whatever, as long as he doesn't spread it, it's fine, once they also thought bacteria didn't exist. Monodelusional disorder is very, very difficult to treat, they think they are right, if you present logical arguments they put their fingers in their ears and start to say lahlahlahlahlah

The EU is in deep shit right now, Berlin is going in pretty aggressive with attacks on the south for not spending enough for the recovery effort and with a massive bailout for an airline without giving 2 shits about what the EU says about it.

I had heard the airline. Lufthansa it was. Why the fuck would it even matter what the EU says unless it's their money being wasted?

Thank you for having had the trouble to make up the graphs. Not to be disrespectful, but:

1) source?
2) I don't understand exactly your point. You show that old people die more often than young people. Well yes.

And taking a look at the first graph, the one you call age cohort and mortality, you are showing roughly 20%-25% of deaths after 55 y.o. pats. bring caused by the virus, that's a lot actually. 55 y.o are not people who would die next winter imho. Did your data show really that around 20% of 55-59 and 60-64 y.o. deaths are from the virus???? because if so it's not great.

Also I don't see what is the time-frame the graph is about. Total deaths since when? January? or just in March? and where? UK? England?

I think it could be more useful if your first graph showed the percentages. The absolute numbers are difficult to see but it seems to be showing very large % shares.

Also if you could make a graph showing mortality compared to non-virus years we could better see the impact the virus might be having, imho of course.

If the virus is really responsible for a 20-25% increase in deaths after 55 it's a lot. Also the 50-54 group seems affected but I really can't see how much. Maybe a separate graph with percentages? Anyway, excellent effort, but since you have the absolute numbers for the graph and you know the time-frame and location then maybe if you provided the info it would help. :-)

I am looking forward to Greece asking for another multi-billion Euro bailout from the EU because the corona virus ruined their tourism for the year. Telling the rest of the EU to foot the bill for Greece when Europe's economy is tanking is only going to fuel the far-right nationalist political parties that want out of the EU.

New song for the pandemic. More tears with it. Here's the song:

All we saw went away.
I dreamt I'd always be by your side.
All we invented isn't anymore.
Now only the past exists.

And now it's time for me to understand.
What to do with your hugs.
And now its time to learn.
How to stop loving.
And know how to erase it right.
Same way it came it went.
Today it's nothing.

And I want.
For everything to start again.
For everything to turn again.
For everything to start anew.
Anew...

And I want.
For the noise to come back.
For the shine to come back.
For everything to start anew.
Anew...

That, disappears and you don't realize.
That gift life sets aside.
It lasts what it lasts and it's already gone.
Neither of us took care of it.

Anew...

And I feel the issue is thinking.
That everything that comes goes.
That everything slowly consumes.
And today silence reigns more.

And now it's time for me to understand
What to do with your hugs
And now its time to learn
How to stop loving
And know how to erase it right
Same way it came it went
Today it's nothing.

And I want
For everything to start again
For everything to turn again
For everything to start anew
Anew...

And I want
For the noise to come back
For the shine to come back
For everything to start anew
Anew...

It has been sent all over social media today. But for some reason I didn't encounter it till now. It's an fairly well known song about new beginings after a loss, so as you can imagine it fits spain's current mood quite well. And with how many losses we endured... It fits the mood of a lot of spaniards in more ways that one. (Even if the loss in the song is specifically a breakup and not a death.) My loss wasn't from corona, but I guess it was recent enough it didn't matter. It felt like a hammer when I encountered it and I've cried my eyes out with that translating job. Hope you enjoyed it. I did need to do so it seems. Feels a lot better now. But I am still dreading how I'll feel when I migrate again come september. Hope I've learned how to start anew by then.

I didn't make up the first two pretty graphs . They're lifted directly from the ONS link I posted. They're mainly there to add colour to my post. The data will be from the start of the outbreak, for England & Wales. If you're interested in this stuff , then those ONS links and the spreadsheet posted have loads of quality data to work with.

I only made up the shitty spreadsheet screen grab (third pic), please disregard it , as it's not publication quality data. I made it because I wanted to see what the mortality rate was for different age groups, rather than having it rounded for the whole country, which is all the media will ever say (if they mention it at all).

>Did your data show really that around 20% of 55-59 and 60-64 y.o. deaths are from the virus???? because if so it's not great.
Yes, it does show that, but I think you've got a bit of the base rate fallacy going. It's like when they say "DRUG INCREASES RISK OF CANCER BY 50%!" . And you find it means an incredibly rare form of cancer goes from 2 in 10,000,000 to 3 in 10,000,000 .
Percentages.PNG
I cut these graphs off at 13-Mar because nothing happens before then. But yes, normally in England and Wales (pop 55 million) about 250 50-54 year olds are dying week in , week out. Covid bumped that up to 400 or so per week for a few weeks . There are about 4,500,000 people in that age bracket.
I agree, it's not nothing, but it's not huge.

Terribly fucked. Look at the cities, how crowded they are, especially with all the favelas. Doubt the quality of Brazilian medical care available to the average person is very high.

Just got this email. Added some embellishments.

SHOPS, RESTAURANTS GET COUNTY OK TO REOPEN

At a special meeting of the County "Board of Supervisors" today, a plan was approved for the county's restaurants and shops to start welcoming customers again.

Also included in what one dumbshit "supervisor" called "Stage 2.5" of reopening are car washes, pet grooming services, offices, outdoor public places, residential cleaning and janitorial, shopping malls, religious observances and schools. Not included are entertainment venues, hotels, libraries, museums, concerts, convention centers or live audience events. Requirements for social distancing and the wearing of face masks when proper distancing isn't possible remain in place.

The approval came after the county "health officer" presented an assessment of the county's readiness for reopening. According to this incompetent fuck, the county meets Nazi Newsom's metrics for hospitalizations, testing positivity rate, testing and hospital capacity and other criteria.

The "supervisors"' vote, which was unanimous, asks the little Hitler's permission for the additional businesses and services to reopen — a step that is considered pro forma, since about 40 counties have already received similar approvals.

Please....this shit should have happened at least six weeks ago. These cocksuckers act like they are doing us a favor. Fuck them. 🖕 Still need to get the hell out of CA. Hope the numbers come up. 👍

Michigan, USA

No major developments today. Per Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D)'s executive orders, retail can legally reopen today, with various restrictions.

Governor Whitmer has admmitted her husband tried to use his position to get to the head of the line to have his boat put in the water up north, but she claims it was "a failed attempt at humor."
Governor Whitmer said:
Whitmer said her husband, Marc Mallory, went up north to their family’s second home in Elk Rapids this weekend for “a night or two” to rake leaves. She said when he called beforehand about the boat, “he jokingly asked if being married to me might move him up in the queue.”
“He thought it might get a laugh,” she said. “It didn’t. And to be honest, I wasn’t laughing either when it was relayed to me, because I knew how it would be perceived.”
“He regrets it, I wish it wouldn’t have happened and that’s really all we have to say about it,” she continued.
(archive)

Today's death toll is unusually low, even for our rapidly dropping curve, I presume because of Memorial Day. Usually there are a lot of deaths added to the toll on Tuesdays.

SHUTDOWN SHOWDOWN
Shelter-in-place order from Tuesday March 24 to Monday April 13. Friday, May 1, Friday, May 15, May 28, but May 22 for the farthest north, May 21, kind of? But also June 12 May 1, maybe? (archive May 21) (executive order saved on KF) . The Republican-controlled legislature has refused to extend Governor Whitmer's emergency authority. Governor Whitmer insists her emergency orders are all still in effect (Rundown on the laws).
State attorney general Dana Nessel (D) is also leaving enforcement of the stay-at-home order to local discretion until the courts weigh in on it (archive). She has stated Governor Whitmer's orders are valid and are to be enforced (archive). The legislature is not calling for civil disobedience at this time (archive).
The legislature has filed a lawsuit against the governor (archive). Oral arguments were heard May 15 (archive). A Court of Claims judge has ruled in favor of the governor. The legislature has appealed.
State senate leader Mike Shirkey (R) is also supporting a petition drive to change the law. Such a petition would require 340,047 signatures to be collected. It would be veto-proof if approved by the legislature, and would go on the next general election ballot if denied by them (archive 1, archive 2, archive 3).
U. S. Rep Paul Mitchell (R - The Thumb) has filed a lawsuit independently against Governor Whitmer, in federal district court. Link, pdf on KF. He has also founded a committee to work on the petition recommended by Sen. Shirkey.
There have been over a dozen lawsuits against Governor Whitmer's actions during this crisis, mostly regarding the shut-down order, in various stages of progress and in various courts (summary of eight of them). However, "all deadlines applicable to the commencement of all civil and probate actions and proceedings" are suspended until the end of the states of emergency and disaster. Executive order, and thus in limbo. (archive).

OTHER SHUTDOWNS

Detroit shootings up, but most other crime down (archive - April 30); Muskegon police report crime is up (archive).
Breaking the lockdown is a misdemeanor, punishable by $1500 fines and 90 days jail time. (Still valid???) Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) has stated there will not be a "ramp up" of police enforcement (archive). The attorney general has left it to local law enforcement to close businesses, as her hands are full with price-gougers and con artists (archive).
The police cannot, at present, pull drivers over simply for being out during the shutdown (archive). Multiple sherrifs from the rural north to Detroit suburbs have stated they will not be enforcing or not strictly enforcing parts or the entirety of the order (archive). An increasing number of businesses are quietly ignoring or publicy defying the shut-down orders.

OFFICIAL DEATH TOLL

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reviews deaths and adds overlooked cases to the count three days a week: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Recovery counts are updated on Saturdays.
No deaths were added today, I presume because of Memorial Day causing delays, though the website doesn't say so.

MDHHS said:
Regular reviews of death certificate data maintained in Vital Records reporting systems are conducted by MDHHS staff three times per week. As a part of this process, records that identify COVID-19 infection as a contributing factor to death are compared against all laboratory confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the Michigan Disease Surveillance System (MDSS). If a death certificate is matched to a confirmed COVID-19 case and that record in the MDSS does not indicate the individual died, the MDSS record is updated to indicate the death and the appropriate local health department is notified. These matched deaths are then included with mortality information posted to the Michigan Coronavirus website.

** As of 2018.
*** 31 and 44 statewide deaths, respectively, were added on these days upon State review. Presumably most were in Detroit, but I don't know exactly how many.
