I’m starting to get a picture in my head of who this byuu guy was and in doing that, I think I’m starting to understand what may have happened here and seeing it in a different light than before.

As some of you mentioned, how odd that, in a time of crisis, he makes suicidal cries for help (I agree with those of you saying that’s what it sounds like it mighta been, mixed with some pills), but reaches out NOT to his husband, but his internet friends, to a point where his last reported phone call, where he ended up dying, was with an internet friend. His final act, a most intimate and likely emotional and distressing one, was spent on the phone with a man he’d never even met, who likely didn’t even know what he looked like or even his real name.

Then, I’m reading this guy was apparently a total recluse, he never left his house.

I’m starting to see why there’s a disconnect here, why people are struggling to understand the big deal, myself included…his real name was completely unknown, he was totally anonymous, after all. But then I considered how he might have saw this from a completely different perspective than we do. It’s true, before his death in June 2021, none of the things said about him in this thread (including the pedophile accusations) were in any way traceable or linked to his real name, his offline identity. So, most people naturally scoff at the suggestion he’d be so distraught over such a thing, as did I, because most of us place way more stock/value in our offline life (where we use our real name) and offline community, since those are the people that employ us, the people we do things with, the people we date/marry/have relationships and friendships with, the people we confide in, spend holidays with, etc. nMost of us consider our offline community to be our main community, our online community is secondary, so we put way less stock into what people who only know us through our internet nickname think or say about us because they don’t do any of the above-mentioned things, so their opinions seem largely inconsequential.

But for byuu, it was quite the opposite - it seems the internet (and his online community) was his main community, the community he valued most and I’d go so far as to say it appears to have been his ONLY community, it doesn’t seem like he had much of an offline life or community. So, his online name byuu and reputation within the online community mattered a great deal to him. We are viewing it from the perspective of it having no impact because no one knew his real name, only his online name, which most of us see as whatever but to him, it’s not whatever, his online name was just as important, if not more important than his real, offline name because his online life was all he had. Did he earn a living through his byuu name, as well? If so, then then his online identity was likely of even greater value to him than just his social life, it’s his entire community in every aspect, including his co-workers, employers and relationships he built, they were his life, his world, the only world that mattered to him. So, I think that’s why these accusations were so devastating for him. Even though none of his real information was known, he felt his reputation as byuu was severely tarnished in the online world, which is the only world he cared about, so to him, it probably felt like the equivalent of how most people would feel having pedophile accusations out there about themselves in a thread attached to their real name, affecting their real (offline) life - losing friends, strained relationships and opportunities because of it. As absurd as it may seem to most of us, from everything I’ve read, I’ll bet that’s why he was so upset over the pedophile accusations in this thread. To him, his online world, online name, online reputation and community were his life, his only life, the only community he valued, the only community he spent time in. He saw his offline life and offline identity the way most of us see our anonymous online community - an inconsequential afterthought, secondary, irrelevant to anything important to him. In Japan there are companies which specialise in helping people disappear. If Near had wanted to vanish and start over in the real world, it sounds like he had the money to do so. I think it was originally just a marriage, but after he finished BSNES and especially after Trump got elected, he began to spiral. It's sometime around then he came out as asexual, started taking HRT/testosterone blockers and then got his balls cut off. I actually do wonder in retrospect if the castration and the HRT were more about crushing his sex drive. I don't think Byuu did very well with real life interactions, which might explain why he struggled so much with therapy (although Sobodash also felt he didn't really try). The Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria self diagnosis seems to have been partially his downfall.

You see this sometimes with people, they cling to labels and instead of using that as a way of getting treatment, they turn it around and say "people with this condition act like this, so I might act more like this too". But that style of thinking without theraputic intervention can lead to a very bad place - "I've told you I've got RSD! It lets you "stop masking" - if anyone ever tells you they're learning to "stop masking", get prepared to run because 9 times out of 10 it means "I'm no longer going to put in any effort into acting like a normal person and am going to 'lean in' to my worst impulses".

In this case the eventual outcome appears to have been "I have RSD and there is a thread speculating I'm a paedophile because I defended shotacon at length, have a babyfur persona and am internet friends with a bunch of paedophiles. Because I have RSD this is something I can't tolerate. If that thread isn't taken down, someone with RSD would normally kill themselves".

I also have been following this for a long time, and I've never caught byuu in a slip up regarding pedophilia. In fact I've never even caught him showing really any sexuality, on his forums or twitter.
