I don’t think they can, nor will they.Maybe not make your animated characters look like fucking shit!! For some reason Disney now hates pretty people and makes the ugliest characters I have ever seen. But to answer your question maybe they can go back to 2d animation and call it retro.
I cannot remember the exact video, or maybe even post here, I got the info from, but 2D is just dead. Many of the schools have phased it out completely other than likely flash animation. Companies also don’t want to switch thanks to the time consumption. 3D is more costly a medium, but the products are shit out faster, which is why all the movie studios use it, and I guess Nickelodeon with all their reboots. Any extra cost can be made up by releasing two-three movies in the span of one 2D.
Also want to talk about this:
I meant it as a "cursed hybrid", like they have wallace's nose fused into gromit head shape plus the overall roundness but i actually love W&G cause i (somehow) had the movie as a kid. W&G's artstyle is very unique claymation and the perfect mix of goofy and cute that looks great in motion, every scene you wonder how much fun the animators were having with it.
This modern style on the other hand looks soulless and even the "attractive characters" look extremely ugly. Everyone nowadays has noodle limbs and no shoulders, its like animators hate edges and didnt even try.

As for the cal-arts style, it also seems to be dictated by current assembly-line bullshit. I got neg rated for it earlier, but it seems that the disgusting blob art style may be for cost cutting and time saving, or at least, that is what the Taxi-man claims when speaking to his connections. Blobs are apparently easier to animate, so artists go lazy to meet the deadlines of corporate, which, more than likely can’t give two shits anymore. This is really apparent in reboots, as Professor Utonium lost edges in the PPG reboot, and so did Joan in Clone High. Don’t know what deadlines and budgets were like back in the day, but they seem to just be getting progressively worse unless you are something like Puss In Boots.
As for why the industry is getting so budgeted, it’s because Bay-Formers and the MCU. These modern shit brands are basically giant cartoons, but they look real, so people take to them more seriously. As such, the need for animation has dwindled because now the toons can look real.
